It’s officially SCI 2019 Week, peeps!!!! We’re just a couple of days away from the best weekend ever, so let’s talk about who is going to win. This year’s field is the most diverse and quite possibly the best field in SCI history. As a fan, this is very, very exciting but when it comes to cutting this field down to the “favorites” it made for tough treading. I legit could make a case for everyone involved crossing the finish line. It’s a field of killers on top of killers (and A.C. Mack) with not a ton of separation between these contenders. Still, after some hard decisions, I was able to put together my ‘Hateful Eight’ if you will heading into Friday night.
Brett Ison (First Round Matchup: Matt Tremont)- Do I really have to explain this? He’s the fucking man and is coming off an “Austin Attitude Era” pop last Sunday in his GCW debut. Brett’s been the Southern Underground Pro Bonestorm Champion for well over 200 days with defenses over fellow entrants B-Boy, O’Shay Edwards, J.D. Drake and won the title by beating Marko Stunt. There may be ‘bigger’ names in this field, but I’m not sure if anyone is hotter right now than Brett.
O’Shay Edwards (First Round Matchup: J.D. Drake)- Not much explanation needed here. He’s beloved and missed around these parts, but is quickly making a name for his self in his new territory. The Big Bad Kaiju recently squared off with the GOD aka Necro Butcher, not to mention his verbal knockout of Justin Credible. Shay is coming in to the weekend excited to see his people, but more excited to show so many people what they missed out on when he was still in the area.
B-Boy (First Round Matchup: Slim J)- B-Boy is my ‘dark horse’ contender. The man is a certified legend. He won CZW: Best of the Best III in 2003 then (15 years later) took Brett Ison to the limit in his first Bonestorm Title defense. From PWG to IWAMS, B-Boy has seen and done it all, but has been criminally underrated his entire career. I’m expecting him to make a big splash in his much anticipated return to Tennessee.
Marko Stunt (First Round Matchup: Billy Buck)- Marko is so hot right now. He’s been tearing it up for a while, but the masses are really starting to get behind Marko after he went loco at AEW’s Fight for the Fallen. I haven’t even brought up the fact that he’s the 2018 Scenic City Futures Showcase winner. He’s got a winning pedigree in Chattanooga which has me thinking Marko could make a run at the #1 spot.
Matt Tremont (First Round Matchup: Brett Ison)- The Bulldozer is heading into SCI weekend ready to do what he do. He was bleeding all over the damn place this past Friday in Asbury Park for GCW which is nothing new for Tremont. He’s another legend that really doesn’t need an SCI Championship for his legacy. He’s just looking to fight some of the best in the world. Whoever comes out of this first round matchup is gonna be tough to beat moving forward. That is assuming they don’t kill each other.
Tony Deppen (First Round Matchup: Daniel Makabe)- Look, he may not be easy to enjoy but he’s really, really good. Add in a championship pedigree that includes a hell of a run as WOMBAT Television Champion and you’ve got a real contender. Deppen was also a part of one of my favorite matches of the year with Alex Zayne back on the Fourth of July. If he can get through a guy like Makabe (who is a real gem), I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tony make a deep run.
Anthony Henry (First Round Matchup: vs. Joey Lynch)- Anthony is smart, dangerous and a legit SCI veteran. Hell, he was in the final just a couple of years ago. Another thing going for Anthony is that he’ll have tag partner J.D. Drake in town with him. Hopefully, the two just let the cards fall where they lay, but you just never know with these two. Joey is coming off a performance for the ages last year and will have the local faithful all fired up. Expect an absolute firefight right out of the gate.
Jaden Newman (First Rounds Matchup: vs. AC Mack)- When AC chose Jaden to be his opponent back at the Scenic City Showcase, I thought “Mack messed up.” Yes, Jaden is young, but he’s been improving seemingly by the day the last 6-8 months. Is Newman a long shot? Absolutely. But don’t be surprised if El Numero Uno ends up making a final run based off sheer will alone.
