Top Picks for Next Year’s Super Bowl

The dust has finally settled on an eventful NFL offseason. Exciting prospects such as Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins were drafted. Marquee stars Odell Beckham, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell were traded. Veterans like Michael Bennett, Eric Weddle, and Justin Houston also found new homes. Now that the dust has settled, talk turns to which team will lift the Super Bowl trophy next February.

Here is a look at five teams that can win Super Bowl LIV.

New England Patriots

The Patriots know how to win, and 6 Super Bowls in 15 seasons prove that. Next year they could add one more to that collection because of the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady connection. Together they have crafted a team that is now the favorite to win every season. The Pats can also play lockdown defense, as they did in holding down the high-powered Los Angeles Rams to 3 points in Super Bowl LIII. To that end, they traded for Michael Bennett, who recorded 9 sacks for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, to replace Trey Flowers. They also signed Mike Pennel Jr., whose 16 solo tackles for the New York Jets last year, will offset Malcolm Brown’s departure. The Pats also got N’Keal Harry and Dontrelle Inman to be Brady targets and Damien Harris to push the team forward. With an even stronger team this year, a trip to Miami is very much on the cards.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were lethal on offense last season (2nd in the league with 32.9 points per game) thanks to Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Brandin Cooks, and Robert Woods. This was backed up by Aaron Donald leading their defensive efforts. But the young Rams didn’t have an answer for the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. Now they are a year better and wiser. The Rams still have firepower with Goff, Gurley, and Cooks, but their defense will play a bigger role. That is especially true given how motivated Donald is coming into the new season, according to a CBS Local article. “If anything, it [losing in the Super Bowl] just motivated me more,” said Donald. “That’s what I want, that’s what I needed, a ring on my finger.”

New Orleans Saints

The Saints were a pass interference call away from making Super Bowl LIII. They’ll contend again this season with the great Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, and Alvin Kamara all back. The Saints also have a good defense (49 sacks, 12 interceptions last season). Marcus Lattimore, Cameron Jordan, Marcus Davenport, Demario Davis, and Sheldon Rankins make up the core of that athletic and disruptive D. They will be key this season if the Saints are to make it to the final and lift the trophy.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are good, and leading the way is Andrew Luck, the man that’s #1 on SoBros’s ‘2019 Top QBs List’. Luck was fantastic last year, and his return to form has raised expectations in Indy. ESPN reports that Colts owner Jim Irsay has guaranteed a title, noting how the franchise is now on solid footing with general manager Chris Ballard, coach Frank Reich, and Luck at QB. The pressure, therefore, is on Luck to deliver that title, especially given the Colts’ massive investment in him. A feature by Ladbrokes includes Andrew Luck in a list of the highest paid athletes in the world, due to his huge $140 million, six-year contract extension he signed with the Colts in 2016. Three years into that extension, Irsay has surrounded his star QB with arguably the NFL’s best O-line and a stout defense. So now is the time for Luck to earn his keep and lead the Colts to their first Super Bowl trophy since 2007.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers can score (26.8 points per game average), and will score. That’s true even if Melvin Gordon’s holdout drags on. The star RB wants a new contract, but that seems some way off at the moment. Despite Gordon’s holdout, the Chargers still have enough weapons. In particular, they have an elite offense led by QB Phillip Rivers, whose targets include Hunter Henry, Mike Williams, and Keenan Allen. Austin Ekeler and Josh Jackson, on the other hand, can take Gordon’s place if needed. The Chargers can play some good defense as well, with Joey Bosa, Casey Hayward, Desmond King II, and Melvin Ingram III leading the way. There is no reason why they can’t make the Super Bowl next year.
