The 2019 Scenic City Invitational is in the books, and with it, another SCI weekend full of incredible memories has passed.
A myriad of big moments – Daniel Makabe blatantly disobeying doctors’ orders and walking out during the 2019 SCI Finals only to win the whole damn thing. Jaden Newman capturing the Crux Wrestling Tri-States Championship. Children running away screaming from the horror of the ‘Fans Bring the Weapons’ Death Match. Manders blowing up wrestling Twitter with his SCI Futures victory.
A lot of emotional moments, too – Kerry Awful, Brett Ison, and Righteous Jesse embracing in the middle of the ring as Crux Wrestling’s Hey Jealousy concludes. The Lynch Mob and The WorkHorsemen raising each other’s hands at the conclusion of a hardcore brawl, the dueling ‘B-Boy’ and ‘Pitbull’ chants, Marko Stunt saying his goodbye to the SUP faithful.
But, lost in all the talk of all of these moments and this who’s who of SCI legends, is a group of teams and individuals who flew under the radar this past weekend. These guys deserve some love for their consistent work just as much as anyone else we’ve talked about this week.
Unsung Heroes of 2019 SCI Weekend
The Carnies – Does it feel weird to anyone else that wrestling Twitter doesn’t seem to be talking about The Carnies as much this year? Kerry Awful shined at in the ‘Fans Bring the Weapons’ Death Match at Crux Wrestling. Nick Iggy had what I would consider one of the most underrated matches of the weekend against Kevin Ku. Collectively, they teamed up with Jaden Newman on Night 2 of the Scenic City Invitational to deliver some six-man tag goodness. These guys absolutely deserve the shoutout.
O’Shay Edwards – The Big Bad Kaiju was one of our favorites to win the whole tournament. He came to Chattanooga to make people look dumb, and he did just that. Wrestling a string of opponents such as Uncle Byff, J.D. Drake, Matt Tremont, going to war in the SCI Finals, and then taking on three other hosses at SUP on Sunday made for a tiring weekend. It’s like people just tried to put him in the ring with the biggest bois and the hardest hitters every night. But, Edwards didn’t slow down one bit. Nah, instead, it was “LFG!” (let’s fuckin’ go). Enjoy this man while you can, folks. The sky’s the limit for O’Shay Edwards.
Brett Ison – The Pitbull is on one hell of a roll as of late – he showed up during the ‘Fans Bring the Weapons’ Death Match at Crux Thursday night and blew up wrestling Twitter. On Friday, he had the war of the night against Tremont. On Saturday, we got the re-match with B-Boy we’ve been hoping for for nine months now. And, on Sunday, he wrapped up the weekend with a successful Bonestorm Championship defense against Edwards, Drake, and Anthony Henry in an emotional fight. Don’t let this guy’s weekend go unnoticed.
Warhorse Jake Parnell – What a shocker. Parnell shows up in the Scenic City Scramble and ends up making a run all the way to the finals. I know the Cline gang was ecstatic about that one. But, it wasn’t just the pop he got when he walked out – Parnell put in work. The scramble was fun, but his match with Ku was a w e s o m e, and he had a great showing in the 2019 SCI Finals. Really underrated night, in my opinion.
Matt Tremont – Y’all, we just saw the f u c k i n g Bulldozer in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Why does it feel like no one is talking about him? I think you could actually make a solid argument for Tremont being the MVP of the weekend. A rowdy death match at Crux, a beautiful brawl against Ison in the first round of the Scenic City Invitational, and a knockout bout with Edwards in the second round. Tremont deserves recognition for a hell of a weekend.
Violence Is Forever – You can’t pick between either of these guys, in my opinion. Ku had the underrated showing against Iggy, but he also went to war with Parnell, and put on one of the best matches of the weekend against B-Boy. Dominic Garrini put on a hell of bout with Manders at SUP that came out of nowhere. But, all things considered, you factor in the tag match against IFHY that was one of the best of the weekend, and these guys were real workhorses of the weekend.
