2019 NFL MVP Watch: Week 3

Welcome in to the 2019 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?

Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2019 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”

2019 NFL MVP WATCH: WEEK 3

5. Mike Evans, Buccaneers WR – Kinda like Sammy Watkins’ performance in Week 1…if you approach 200 receiving yards, you gotta be in the discussion for the best performances of the week. Though the Bucs lost that game in dramatic fashion to the Giants, Evans proved what an elite receiver he can be. He finished the game with eight catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

4. Dalvin Cook, Vikings RB – Another week, another 100-yard game for the NFL’s leading rusher through three games. Cook posted 110 yards and a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. He now has 375 yards and four touchdowns on the young season.

3. Christian McCaffrey, Panthers RB – The Swiss Army Knife of the Panthers offense is averaging 150 yards from scrimmage through three games. Though the Panthers don’t look very good this season, there’s no doubt McCaffrey is one of the NFL’s best. He finished with 153 yards and a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals, with three catches for 35 yards to boot. He’s now second in the NFL in rushing with 318 yards on the season.

2. Daniel Jones, Giants QB – You can’t deny the game Jones had on Sunday, and you can’t deny how much he lifted up that Giants offense in an 18-point comeback win. That’s the definition of ‘value,’ folks. Jones went 23/36 for 336 yards and two touchdowns, with another two touchdowns on the ground. But, it was his poise and command on the field that puts him in the Week 3 MVP discussion.

1. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB – Yeah, maybe I was wrong about defenses figuring out Mahomes. He’s certainly off to another MVP-caliber start in 2019. In a big game against the undefeated Ravens, Mahomes went 27/37 for 374 yards and three touchdowns. He’s thrown at least three touchdowns in every game this season, and his 134.9 passer rating leads the NFL. This honor is his to lose.
