College Football Week 5 Recap

After missing last week, I’m back with a check up on what went down in the college football landscape. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a ‘wild’ weekend, but there were a few surprises. Look for the playoff dominoes to really start falling in the coming weeks

Clemson hangs on: I’m just gonna get it out there. I loved Mack Brown’s decision to go for two – I just hate hate hate the play call. Clemson is soooo fast from sideline to sideline that a triple option was a real head scratcher. Still, it was a hell of an effort that had Tiger fans on the edge of their seat. As it stands, we’re a month into the season and still not sure what to make of Clemson. They looked unbeatable to end last season, but that feels like a long time ago. The schedule is light, so smart money is still on Clemson to win out. That said, they’ve got to get their offense figured out ASAP.

Notre Dame bounces back: After a heart breaker of a loss in Athens, all eyes were on Notre Dame to see how they would react. After a skittish first half, the Irish defense came alive to hold Virginia to only a field goal in the second half. Notre Dame finished with eight sacks (one shy of the team record) and very nearly had two defensive touchdowns. On the offensive side, Tony Jones Jr got the ball moving on the ground which has been missing the first few games of the season. If the offense can continue to grow while the defense keeps up this brand of pass rush…watch out for the Irish to turn some heads to end the season.

SEC domination: Alabama, Auburn and Florida all cruised in their games, winning by 20+ across the board. Bama did give up 31, but they nearly scored 60 again, making their defense a moot point. Florida shut out Towson and Auburn turned up all over Mississippi State. We’re looking down the barrel of Auburn at Florida this Saturday afternoon. Time to start thinning out the herd, peeps!

Ohio St looks legit: I’m an admitted Buckeye hater. Every year, I’m the guy saying “who cares” when they win by 30 over another Big 10 team. Not this year. I don’t know what exactly it is but they just feel like a different team. Justin Fields can do it all and the pass rush OSU puts on the field can be downright scary. October is gonna be a little tougher though with Michigan State and Wisconsin coming to Columbus.

Wisconsin Tuff: It took two defensive touchdowns but the Badgers got the win and continue their (hopeful) run to the playoffs. Jonathan Taylor cracked a hundred rushing yards and found pay dirt, but enough can’t be said about the Wisconsin defense. There are some talking heads that even say the Badgers have the best defense in the country. Through four games they’ve allowed 29 total points, y’all. We’ll see how they look against that high powered Buckeye offense in a couple of weeks.

Oklahoma keeps rolling: Jalen Hurts threw for 400+ yards and added another 70 on the ground. The Sooners ended up scoring enough to win in the first quarter as crazy as that is to say. Aside from the week one matchup with Houston, the Sooners defense has held their other opponents to 16 points or less. All the talk has been about Hurts and the offense, but this defense may be the key to beating Texas in a couple of weeks.
