Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the 2-0 Maryland Terrapins, who could very well be the surprise team of the infantile 2019 college football season.
They absolutely shit-canned a #21 ranked Syracuse Orange team at home last week to the tune of 63-20. S E V E N different guys got carries for the Terps offense, and as a unit, they rushed for 354 yards and SIX touchdowns against the Orange. Their 63 points were the most they’d ever scored against a ranked opponent.
As a result, they took their spot in the AP Poll this week, showing up at #21 and enjoying their highest ranking since 2006.
In Week 1, they demolished an albeit vastly inferior Howard squad, 79-0. They broke a program record for ‘most points in a half,’ scoring 56 in the first half of that game. Another field goal or a safety, and they would’ve broken the program’s record for most points in a game, period. For now, that honor stays with the 1927 squad that hung 80 on Washington College.
All in all, the Terps have scored 149 to start 2019. As a program, they have never scored that many points in back-to-back games. Those kids are playing well under head coach Mike Locksley, who Maryland plucked away from Alabama last December.
This program has had such a black cloud hanging over it from the inexcusable conduct of rightfully maligned (read: fuckin’ asshole) D.J. Durkin that led to the death of Jordan McNair. The monument they have to McNair is a nice touch, but I still can’t see it or hear his name without feeling my blood boil thinking about how the ignorance and outright negligence of that staff led to losing a young man too soon.
The Terps – the team, the fans, everyone – deserves some positivity, so I’m glad to see them getting a little. I know the hype train’s crazy right now, but at worst, this looks like a definite bowl team in 2019. And, it certainly looks like they’ve found the right coach.
They’ll have to handle business against Temple this week, but if they do, they’d be 3-0 with a real litmus test against Penn State looming in Week 4. All things considered, this could be one of the biggest surprises of the 2019 season (though I’m also looking at you, North Carolina) come December.
