Rookie Tennessee Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown has shown electric potential this season, but against the Atlanta Falcons, he had his big breakout game. It has been a long ass time since we’ve seen a wide receiver take the field in two-tone blue who has shown the similar sort of skill that our boy Broadway Brown possesses. But, what impressed me most about his two touchdown catches on Sunday was his positioning and instinct. Let’s be professional journalists and examine, shall we?

Desmond Trufant takes his eyes off of Brown for a split second, and Brown sees that and breaks in at JUST the right moment. #21 goes swimming, as Brown puts about five yards between the two of ’em in the middle of the field. Just an excellent break by Brown there, but what he does after the catch is incredible.
He gets a hell of a hand from Jonnu Smith on this play, but there are still FOUR Falcons defenders in the area. Recognizing that, Brown takes the PERFECT angle to elude the Falcons. If not for that, he might not have beaten Deion Jones in a foot race.
That’s the kind of situational awareness that complements talent well. Seeing that sort of recognition by Brown is just as encouraging as the score itself. But, that was only one touchdown – he’d go on to post another one later in the game.

Intentional or not, they’re picking on Trufant again here. Brown gets outside and positions himself where he’s the only one that’s going to catch that ball. Marcus Mariota throws an absolute dime here, and Brown drags those toes for the touchdown. We knew Brown had the potential to be electric, but we’re seeing some of the nuanced things you have to do to be successful at the position in the NFL out of him, too. I’m about damn ready to call this kid the Titans WR1. Not a knock on Corey Davis, as I’m still a believer in #84, but Brown just may prove to be #TheGuy. If they can both turn it on, this is going to be a formidable duo.
In a contest that saw Julio Jones on the other side of the field, it’s wild to think that A.J. Brown was the best #11 on the field on Sunday.
