I’ve never seen Beverly Hills Cop (I’ve barely seen any movies that were made prior to 2000), but I’ll tell you what – the Beverly Hills Cop theme is one of the most iconic tunes of all time. I mean, I don’t know of too many movies that have that sort of song to go with ’em. You think about Jaws…The Avengers…Harry Potter…those come to mind right away. But, if you stop and think about how many movies have ever been made in the entire history of humans, then that’s probably a small percentage. Well, Beverly Hills Cop is in that same category of films that feature a song that just sticks with you.
Personally, I would include MacGruber on that list, because it made me fall in love with Eddie Money’s “Take Me Home Tonight” all over again. But, MacGruber is a much more divisive movie than I ever thought it could be. So, I don’t think I’ll ACTUALLY mention it in the same category as all of those other movies that aren’t as good as MacGruber.
I’ve spent entirely too much time talking about MacGruber (what else is new, Stoney?). My larger point here is that when you have that sort of iconic tune or theme song, you’re going to stick in the mind of the collective. This song is still in the grand lexicon of Americana. So, it’s going to pop up from time to time. Well, it popped up for me a few days ago when I was listening to the SoBros Network’s Friday Jams playlist, and I had a revolutionary thought.
I think this song was actually ahead of its time. I think this could very well be the first instance of ASMR ever recorded. That’s right – the Beverly Hills Cop theme.
Look at it on a more granular level.
First and foremost, there’s the rhythmic and harmonic tones of the keyboard, pulsing and droning for several minutes. Then, if you listen closely, you’ll hear a myriad of instruments. Just when the keyboard melody rests, you get a nice, tingle-inducing percussive instrument reverberating in your brain. And, I can talk about this phenomenon without talking about the tapping of the beat. It’s common knowledge that tapping is one of the most effective sleep triggers out there. That’s just hard science, folks.
Turn on this song, and you’ll experience all the tingles. Every last one of ’em.
All I’m saying here is this: if you’re having trouble sleeping, you might want to turn on the Beverly Hills Cop theme and see if it helps. That’s all I’m trying to do here with this website: help people.
