Music Monday: Dead Man’s Bones

Finally, it’s that lovely time of year for everything spooky!

The evenings arrive earlier, bringing daily sights of haunted yards, televisions glistening with horror films, and the one thing that can make it all tie together perfectly: amusingly haunted music.

For the past 8 years, there’s been one band/album I put on repeat during cool, October nights:  Dead Man’s Bones.

The first time I heard this group was a perfect scenario.  I was driving late on a cold, rainy night down a dark highway in a remote area of Tennessee.  I was cruising along, trying to focus on the road during the wet, dark conditions while listening to my favorite radio station.

Nashville used to be blessed with this radio station, run by Vanderbilt University, in which every hour could be a different program, directed by students and regular folks alike.  The program could go from hardcore hip-hop, to classical, then on to comedy in the matter of a single commute.

Sometimes, the person behind the controls wouldn’t even chime in between songs, they would just play their music, with no pause, for as long as they were allowed.

On this particular night, the DJ was using this method as their favorite tunes just shuffled along.  When a slowly building, raw instrument rhythm began to play.  It was Dead Man’s Bones’ “Lose Your Soul”, which combines the perfect amount of clapping percussion, random synth, gloomy piano, a children’s choir, and the unique groaning voice of Ryan Gosling.

 Yes, that’s right….Ryan Gosling

This project by Gosling, and good friend Zach Shields, incorporates their love for haunted themes and experimental music into a full-length album that flows seamlessly from start to finish.

The album, also titled Dead Man’s Bones, features the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music’s children’s choir, providing an all-encompassing theme of feeling Halloween.  I urge anyone who is eager to get into the Halloween spirit, or just looking for some late-night tunes on these spooky-cold nights, to give Dead Man’s Bones a listen!

Enjoy!
