The change in weather this week along with my anniversary and overall bad time management made me late in getting your weekly new music update out but rejoice because it is here. This weeks selection has a very international flavor to it along with a local touch as well so curl up with some hot cocoa and push play on some new music. Now I’m off to start working on a special Holiday themed issue for those looking to add some new festive songs to their holiday playlist.
FKA Twigs Magdalene
One of the dominant themes in FKA Twigs sophomore album is that of inclusion. She spends a great deal of the album examining what it feels to be a part of something and then the loneliness of not. She struggles with the feeling of never finding love again while those around her are finding love with ease. Twigs pulls from her high profile relationships with Robert Pattinson and Shia LaBeouf to help pen the tracks “thousand eyes” and “cellophane”. In the later she fights with the feeling to succeed while basically living in a fish bowl while everyone looking in is waiting for her to make a mistake.
The U.K. singer has been making waves ever since her 2014 debut LP1. Even Prince was mesmerized by her after she played at his Paisley Park compound and performed his hit “Kiss” with Twigs that night that left the audience in a state of shock. Magdalene is sure to be a breakout album for Twigs due in part to its honesty and rawness. @FKAtwigs
Bishop Briggs Champion
Another British singer ready to stake claim in the states with a new album is Bishop Briggs. Briggs releases what she calls the most vulnerable music she’s ever written. Briggs was wrestling with a breakup when writing the album and wrote on Instagram “I think I wrote the album that I needed to hear at that time.” She hopes that it can be of help to someone who maybe is dealing with heartbreak as well even if it’s just for a moment.
New single “Jekyll and Hide”, which explores what it’s like to date someone with two different sides, was released this week and follows up early singles “Champion” and the very relatable “Tattoed On My Heart”. You can catch Bishop next Wednesday in St. Louis at the Pageant. @thatgirlbishop
Luke Combs What You See Is What You Get
What’s an an artist to do after the first 5 singles they release all go number 1 on the country charts? Hell if I know honestly but if your rising country star Luke Combs you work hard on a second album hoping to repeat that success. Starting off with number 1 and 2 singles is nothing to sneeze at. Combs has mastered the ability to go back and forth from writing honky tonk singalongs and scorching ballads. The 17 songs that make up What You See are comprised of the 5 songs of his earlier EP The Prequel and 15 new songs including the destined to be on every wedding reception playlist “Even Though I’m Leaving”. The Grammy nominated Combs comes across a bit brash on the album due in part to his abilities as a song writer. That attitude is working for him as he was asked to join the Grand Ole Opry earlier this year. Luke makes a stop in Nashville on his first arena headlining tour on Friday, December 13th. @lukecombs
Six60 Six60
New Zealand pop-soul band Six60 are ready to follow in the footsteps of fellow countryman Lorde as they release their latest album in the hopes of world wide success. The quintet’s latest album is self titled like their previous two releases and are about to embark on a world tour. The group which has some similarities to Maroon 5 sound wise decided to evolve their sound by bringing in producer James Ryan Ho and introducing more native New Zealand instruments. The Grammy Award winning Ho has produced for Lorde, John Legend and Alicia Keys and was a driving force in the band exploring a new direction. The use of Taonga pūoro, the traditional instruments of the Māori people of New Zealand, gives the new album a very relaxed, folk like sound that at times even dips it’s toes into reggae. “Please Don’t Go” which has Maroon 5 written all over it is the song most resembling the bands previous outings. @six60
