This movie may seem familiar to some maybe even most. Race to Witch Mountain is a re-imagining of Escape to Witch Mountain. Now I must say that I have never seen Escape to Witch Mountain so I cannot compare the two. I don’t really want to anyways. The movie should be seen as it is meant to be: A re-creation not a remake.
This Witch Mountain stars Dwayne Johnson ( “The Rock”) as a cab driver who gets two teenage passengers who take him on a thrill ride that mixes adventure, action, and sci-fi. The movie tries to dip in to a lot of genres while keeping it family friendly. The two teens have a secret: They’re aliens. And they must get to, of course, Witch Mountain in order to save their planet and ours.
The movie is about getting the kids back home, but Dwayne Johnson’s character seems to be the focus. Johnson has become a Disney darling as of late. It all began with the hit The Game Plan and now this one, and later this year The Tooth Fairy. Johnson is good in this and brings attitude and humor to his character. But I worry that he will be stuck in these roles and will not venture out and try new things. Only time will tell. However, Johnson does hold his own in this movie and adds a spark to the story.
The movie itself is for kids. I think you have to keep that in mind while you watch this. There are some things you may roll your eyes at if you are older than 14. And it is predictable. You know how each scene may end, but you definitely will know how the whole story plays out. But the movie is still fun to watch and gives you a lot to look at. As I said before, the movie mixes a lot of genres and it adds entertainment to this family film.
Race to Witch Mountain may or may not be as good as Escape to Witch Mountain. I don’t care. This Witch Mountain is a movie you will enjoy, but may not remember by the end of the year. However, there are definitely worse movies out there and at least this one has a right to be a little cheesy at times.
