So, I Got My First Fade

Those of you who know me know that I tend to let myself go on a frequent basis. Just never really been a well-groomed guy. I’m all about efficiency – what costs the least amount of money, what takes up the least amount of my time, that kinda thinking.

The last time I got an actual haircut – like, going to a Great Clips or some shit – was the spring of 2005. I let my hair grow out from there. It grew down past my shoulders, and I never did anything with it. Just tied that shit up in a pony tail and went on about my business. A year later, I got tired of fooling with it, so I just slapped a two guard on a pair of $15 trimmers, shaved it all off, and have been doing the same thing since.

Thirteen and a half years later, I was talked into getting a fucking fade. I was a bushy ass mess. I started thinking about doing something different. Maybe getting some sort of actual haircut. We always go up to New Jersey to spend a couple of weeks with the fam during the holiday, and I happened to notice a barber shop in the small town we were staying in. I brought it up one night when we were hangin’ with my boy Jon and he said he knew just the place and would even pay for it. How could I say no to that?

We started talking about getting the Titans logo shaved into my head, and that shit was vetoed real quick. We grabbed our boy Kenny, packed up, and headed to Kings of the Craft in Red Bank, New Jersey.

I’ll admit – I was kinda nervous. I had no idea what to expect. But, since I’m a fucking workaholic, I just kept saying “you’ll get content out of it” over and over. Plus, I don’t have to leave the house for my day job, so no one would even know.

My man Laurence put me in the chair and worked some magic.

Man, I’m not going to lie – I didn’t think I could pull it off. I just have this dopey round head that’s fat and bowling ball-esque. But, when Laurence spun me around in that chair, I felt like a brand new man, 10 feet tall and bulletproof. Lo and behold, I actually pulled it off.

AND we still got the content, y’all. Win win win, all around.

Listen, people – self care is important. I get so wrapped up in time and money, I lose sight of that sometimes. I realize I’m in the minority here and most of y’all are probably like, “yeah, dude – we get regular haircuts,” but there’s a larger message here. Treat yo self.
