Those of you who know the inner workings of my day to day life know that I take two weeks at the end of the year to relax and recharge my batteries. I spend the holidays up in New Jersey with relatives, and I come back to Nashville ready to take on the world and/or run through a brick wall.
Well, during the holidays this year, I encountered something so atrocious that I had to write about it. I wouldn’t be a responsible journalist if I didn’t take my job seriously and warn the people who frequent this website and take in my work. I have something incredibly serious to warn you about today.
Do NOT try the “Nashville hot” flavor at Buffalo Wild Wings.
I don’t know what the deal is with people confusing the two, but “Nashville hot” does not equal “buffalo sauce.” I know Cadbury once encountered a pizza somewhere that was billed as Nashville hot, but when he got the pizza, it was just a chicken pizza slathered in buffalo sauce.
Folks, it’s not that hard. Buffalo….Nashville…..much like they aren’t the same city, they aren’t the same seasoning either.
This isn’t the first time this has happened, though. Two years ago, I visited Washington, DC on a work trip for the day job. Specifically, I worked out of the Crystal City area. I walked into some sandwich shop, noticed they were advertising a “Nashville hot” chicken sandwich and told my coworkers I had to verify its credibility.
I was honestly offended. It tasted like a completely ordinary chicken sandwich that someone may have accidentally put two extra shakes of black pepper on. Just an insulting attempt at the real deal.
I imagine similar PSAs existing in Italy, but about pizza, and so on and so forth. I’m sure a lot of you are thinking, “yeah, no shit, Sherlock.” But, for those of you who, like me, thought “well, Nashville hot chicken is just a blend of ordinary spices…surely they can’t fuck it up that bad,” let this be a cautionary tale.
Nothing I’ve had outside of Nashville is like the real thing. Just keep this in mind the next time you’re traveling to far off exotic locations.
