Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Tennessee Titans have hired Anthony Midget for the vacancy left by Kerry Coombs, who left the Titans to take a defensive coordinator position with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Coombs leaves some big shoes to fill. His energy was unparalleled, and ultimately, the production his squad yielded was spectacular.
Midget has been with Bill O’Brien since he was the safeties coach at Penn State. He jumped ship to the Houston Texans with him, and has been there since. These last two seasons, Midget served as the secondary coach. So, this is technically a lateral move for him. But, hell….wouldn’t you rather coach the Titans defensive backs instead of the Texans defensive backs?!?
I know there’s a lot that goes into grading a secondary….pass rush, run support, talent…all of that. But, if you look at this Texans secondary, I don’t know what exactly would inspire confidence here. Midget didn’t have too much to work with, to be fair. The Texans trotted out some retreads, and as good as he’s been (bless his heart), Johnathan Joseph has to be, what? 70 years old? They nailed the Justin Reid pick, but otherwise, Midget hasn’t really shown what he can do with a loaded secondary.
So, it has to be about the relationship, right?! Mike Vrabel is obviously connected to this guy. He obviously sees something special in this guy. And, that’s why we’re here. Vrabel has earned the right to buy our trust, y’know? In JRob we trust. In Vrabel we trust. With liberty and justice for all.
My question, though, and what I don’t understand…is why O’Brien would allow it? I understand that you want your assistants to grow as coaches and to get bigger and better opportunities, but a lateral move? I don’t know. My theory: O’Brien’s using Anthony Midget to perpetuate mediocrity, and bring the Titans secondary down to the level of the Texans. Think Nick Saban vouching for Derek Dooley in an effort to get him to stay at Tennessee. Am I the only one that thinks about these little chess matches?
I am? Okay…I’ll see myself out…
(For the record, I was being facetious in that last paragraph. I know some people reading might get mad at me and call me an idiot for posting that. Welcome to Tennessee, Coach Midget!)
