“Big Natural” Stoney Keeley here – I’m back for another look at the movie calendar. Today, we’re going to be previewing the theatrical releases for February 2020. But, before we dive into February, let’s take a look back at January, and how our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, graded out the month with his patented #VicksFlicks star rating.

Jan. 2020 #VicksFlicks Ratings

  • 6 Underground- 1.5/5 stars
  • Spies in Disguise- 2/5 stars
  • Weathering With You- 2.5/5 stars
  • 1917- 5/5 stars
  • Like A Boss- 1.5/5 stars
  • Just Mercy- 3.5/5 stars
  • Underwater- 2/5 stars
  • Troop Zero- 2/5 stars
  • Bad Boys for Life- 3.5/5 stars
  • Dolittle- 1.5/5 stars
  • The Gentlemen- 3/5 stars (check out our podcast review)
  • The Rhythm Section- 1.5/5 stars

That’s a cumulative 2.5/5. Not exactly the best grade – but you have a couple of flops in Dolitte, The Rhythm Section, Like A Boss, and 6 Underground weighing that score down big time. The highlights of the month were definitely 1917 (technically saw a limited release in December), Just Mercy, Bad Boys for Life, and The Gentlemen. Now, on to February.

Theatrical Releases: February 2020

February 7

Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn Margot Robbie reprises her role as DC Comics icon Harley Quinn, with Renee Montoya, The Huntress, and Black Canary added to the fold. Ewan McGregor plays the villain, Black Mask. I’ve been iffy on these trailers, and outside of Wonder Woman, I haven’t been high on DC’s efforts as of late, but it seems to be getting some positive buzz.

The Lodge (limited release) – The Lodge premiered at Sundance a year ago, but it’s getting a limited release this Friday. It’s an unsettling horror flick about a woman being snowed in at an isolated lodge with her fiance’s two kids. That’s when all the weird shit starts happening.

February 14

Fantasy Island – This one’s based on a 1970s TV show, and revolves around a dude who brings people out to his remote tropical island to enact their fantasies. Sounds steamy, right? Well, the fantasies quickly turn to nightmares. The question of what we would do to make our wildest fantasies comes true seems interesting, but this trailer doesn’t. That said, how can you deny Michael Pena?

The Photograph – With all of the unsettling horror movies and thrillers coming out this month, The Photograph just might be the Valentine’s Day movie for you romantics out there. Issa Rae plays Mae Morton, who discovers a photograph of her mother that leads her to digging into her mother’s history. Along the way, she encounters a journalist, and there just may be some sparks. Bring your tissues for this one, folks.

Sonic the Hedgehog – Let’s see them teeth, baby! I never thought I’d see the day when a live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was made, but here we are. The fact that they got James Marsden and Jim Carrey for it blows my mind. The kiddos ought to love it, and just for the nostalgia of it all, I might go give it a shot. But, man…it looks a little phoned in just from the trailers.

February 21

Brahms: The Boy II – The streak of unsettling creepy movies in February continues, and let me tell you, if you’re into haunted dolls and creepy stories about kids, this is one for you. Me? I’m all the way out on this one. I prefer to actually sleep at night.

The Call of the Wild – I’m in on this one. Grizzled Harrison Ford in a live action adaptation of the classic Jack London, with the goodest of good bois? Sign me up.

The Night Clerk (limited release) – Tye Sheridan plays a hotel night clerk who watches the guests at the hotel to help him improve his social skills. When someone is murdered on his shift, he becomes the prime suspect. Can he reveal his secret to prove his innocence?! This one looks like a hell of a thriller.

February 28

The Invisible Man – Inspired by the classic Universal monster tale, this scifi thriller stars Elisabeth Moss playing a woman who was left an immense fortune by an abusive ex who committed suicide. The catch? She has to prove she isn’t insane. Seems reasonable, right? Who am I kidding? You guys know where this one’s going. The invisible man shows up causing destruction as only he can. So stoked for this one.

Someone’s sitting in that chair.” LFG!
