Vic Beasley Truly Gets the Chance to Prove It With the Titans

The Tennessee Titans signed OLB Vic Beasley to a one year contract.

Pass rush help was high on the list of the needs for the Tennessee Titans heading into free agency this year. They’ve addressed that need, at least in part, by signing former Atlanta Falcons outside linebacker, and NFL sack leader (in 2016), Vic Beasley, to a one-year contract.

Look – I get it. Vic Beasley does not equal Jadeveon Clowney. A lot of Titans fans got their hopes up after hearing rumors swirl that the team was in on Clowney earlier this week. They were hoping the team would make a splash with its biggest hole, but it didn’t happen (at least as of the time of this writing).

But, this is still absolutely a home run for the Titans. They don’t call these things ‘prove-it’ deals for nothing. One season. $9.5M (with a max of $12M). That’s all the Titans are on the hook for. The potential reward is worth the risk.

Beasley isn’t your typical Jon Robinson type. The biggest concern surrounding him and his time in Atlanta was his work ethic. He simply wasn’t always consistent. He led the NFL in sacks in 2016 with 15.5, but only tallied five each in 2017 and 2018. Last season, that number rose to eight, as he had a bit of a rejuvenation in production. If you can pair him with Harold Landry and get 10 sacks out of him, that’s an absolute steal…which brings me to my next point.

The guy’s going to have the best supporting cast on defense that he’s probably ever had. This is a complete unit, and I’d venture a guess that that means he won’t have to perform beyond his scope. His ability in stopping the run has been called into question at times, but with this defensive line in place, I doubt he’ll be asked to do too much.

Beasley has all the raw talent in the world. If the Titans can get him motivated, and use him in a role doing what he does best, we’re going to be talking about re-signing the guy next spring. If not, the Titans can cut bait with minimal damage. The onus is on Beasley – he will truly get the chance to prove it.

This could be a situation in which a fresh start proves vital for a talented football player. That’s how I’m leaning towards this signing, and think there’s plenty of reason for optimism for Vic Beasley in Nashville.
