“Big Natural” Stoney Keeley here – I’m back for another look at the movie calendar. Today, we’re going to be previewing the theatrical releases for March 2020. But, before we dive into March, let’s take a look back at February, and how our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, graded out the month with his patented #VicksFlicks star rating.

FEB. 2020 #VICKSFLICKS RATINGS

  • Gretel & Hansel: 2.5/5
  • Miss Americana: 3.5/5
  • Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made: 3/5
  • Birds of Prey: 3.5/5
  • Horse Girl: 2/5
  • A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon: 3/5
  • The Photograph: 2/5
  • Call of the Wild: 3/5
  • The Lodge: 1.5/5
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: 3/5

That’s a cumulative score of 2.7/5, which is up from January’s 2.45. Where January had seven films with a #VicksFlicks score of two or less, February only had three. Solid numbers for major releases like Call of the Wild and Sonic the Hedgehog, but I have to say – I’m a little surprised to see Birds of Prey tie for the lead this month with a score of 3.5.

2020 Scores:

Theatrical Releases: March 2020

March 6

Pixar’s OnwardTom Holland and Chris Pratt voice a pair of elf brothers who embark on an epic quest to discover magic and bring their dad back to life. It’s Pixar, so you know it’s going to tug on the heart strings. Take your tissues.

The Way Back – Why are we kicking off March with so many tugs at the heart strings? This has been lauded as an instant sports classic, and with Ben Affleck playing a recovering alcoholic who is offered a job coaching a high school basketball team, it sets up to be quite the redemption story.

March 13

BloodshotVin Diesel. Action/science fiction. Comic book adaptation. If you’re into it, you’re into it. To me, it looks like a similar story to one we’ve seen several times before.

The Hunt – Wanna hunt humans for sport? Into that sort of thing? Maybe The Hunt is for you, then. This one is supposed to be highly disturbing and upsetting, but -and this is just my opinion (I haven’t seen the movie)- it has that ‘controversial for the sake of being controversial’ vibe to it. We’ll see.

My Spy – The kids may love this one, but fair warning – it looks pretty campy. Which is fine – I don’t think My Spy was made for adults. Dave Bautista plays a spy who cuts a deal with a nine-year-old girl to teach her, essentially, how to be a spy after she catches his CIA operation on video.

March 20

I Still Believe – The makers of I Can Only Imagine are back with I Still Believe, the life story of Christian music superstar Jeremy Camp.

A Quiet Place: Part II – It’s safe to say that A Quiet Place was one of the biggest surprises of 2018. Emily Blunt is back for the sequel, and it certainly looks like we’ll be exploring a lot more of the world, with the monsters creeping around, and meeting some new faces. This one picks up right where the first one left off, and figures to be one of the bigger releases of the month.

March 27

Mulan – We’re closing out the month with a doozy. These live action Disney remakes have, by and large, been a bit disappointing. But -and damn, I hate to get my hopes up- Mulan looks different. “My father cannot fight…so I will take his place” just hits like a stack of bricks. LFG! Again…after Lion King and Aladdin, I’m trying not get my hopes up. But, this one looks epic.

All in all, March looks decent – I’m in on Mulan, and might make time for The Way Back and A Quiet Place: Part II if I can. Another month in the books, and The Gentlemen is still my pick for ‘Movie of the Year.’
