XFL Roundup: Tough Day at the Office for Landry Jones

An eventful weekend in the XFL was marked by the Tampa Bay Vipers getting their first win of the season, and Landry Jones having an exceptionally bad day.

Alright, time for this week’s XFL roundup, and boy did things not go well for Dallas Renegades quarterback Landry Jones. The Renegades squared off against the XFL’s best team, the Houston Roughnecks, in what was dubbed the #TexasThrowdown. How did the Roughnecks feel about it?

Yeah, three interceptions in the FIRST QUARTER will do that for a quarterback. I don’t write the rules. I just report the facts. They said, “get Landry Jones THE FUCK outta here.” Remember when Landry Jones was going to be part of the elite quarterback class of the XFL? Now, he’s got his own head coach wondering just what the hell he’s doing.

Here’s the thing, though – the Renegades aren’t that bad. I mean…even with all of those first quarter picks, they still had a shot to knock off the best team in the XFL. In fact, they’re only two losses this season came to the Roughnecks and the St. Louis Battlehawks. Those are easily the top two teams in this league. When you look at the XFL West, the Renegades just have to hold off the Los Angeles Wildcats and the Seattle Dragons to hold onto that 2nd playoff spot in the division. That’s completely doable. Jones just has to get his shit together.

Around the XFL

The other big story of the week was the better-than-their-record-would-indicate Tampa Bay Vipers getting their first win of the season. This is a talented offense that puts up yards. They have two of the three leading rushers in the XFL – DeVeon Smith is at #1 with 296 rushing yards, while Jacques Patrick is at #3 with 231 rushing yards. For whatever reason, they just couldn’t turn the yardage into touchdowns. That changed last night, when the Vipers rocked the DC Defenders 25-0. Good for Marc Trestman. They beat the Defenders so bad, they’re going to have to fire their defensive coordinator again.

A week after trouncing the Defenders 39-3, the Los Angeles Wildcats lost to the New York Guardians 17-14. Are the Guardians actually decent? We saw the shit show of Matt McGloin play itself out. It’s been a hot minute since they rocked the Vipers, but they seem to be correcting course. That defense can generate some pressure, too. It may be their ticket to a playoff spot.

The Battlehawks take sole possession of the lead in the XFL East after beating the Dragons 23-16. Their defense has allowed the fewest touchdowns in the XFL so far this season, and Jordan Ta’amu is playing outstanding football right now. This could be the XFL’s dark horse as we head towards the midpoint. I would be all for a Battlehawks-Roughnecks rematch from Week 2 in the XFL Championship. They’re building a championship team in St. Louis.
