Today, we’re talking about one of my absolute favorite movies of the past 10 years. Cold in July is a film all it’s own. It’s soooooooo good, but it’s really hard to talk about without spoiling it, so I’m just gonna give the most basic plot I can.
In 1980s Texas, Richard Dane (Michael C. Hall) kills a burglar that has broken into his house. That’s it. That’s all I’m gonna say. The twists and turns that come from this will turn you for a loop.
Hall is great in the lead role, though for so many people it’s hard not to see him as “Dexter.” He’s got a rocking 80s mullet in this, so take that for what you will. Along with Hall, we have Sam Shepard as the father of the slain robber who is downright scary at times in this for various reasons.
Hopefully I’ve piqued your interest a bit, but if not, I’ve got three words for you: Don Fucking Johnson.
That’s right – the Don is in this as a super flashy bounty hunter and he absolutely steals every scene he is in. Wyatt Russell is also great in a role I won’t disclose for reasons. Not a lot of screen time for Wyatt on the whole, but he brings something a bit sinister that we haven’t seen out of him so far in his career.
Aside from an absolutely dope cast, the film also has a kick ass synth soundtrack. Think of something in the same realm of the trippy Stranger Things soundtrack that we all fuck with. The deeper you get into the story, the more that synth score starts to really resonate. I really just want to dive into everything, but for the sake of spoilers, I just can’t. There is so much good stuff here that I want everyone to experience it first hand.
Cold in July is available to rent from all the places y’all rent films from on the internet!
