With all the love Uncut Gems has received, you won’t catch it in the ‘Ever Seen That?’ corner. I may not get to gush on that Safdie Brother film, but there is another I can. Good Time was released back in 2017 and even with the praise it got out of Cannes, it still feels like it’s very much under the radar.

As mentioned, it’s directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, but both brothers pulled double duty. Josh co-directed and co-wrote the film. While Benny also co-directed, he also shows up on the other side of the camera as the brother to our lead character played by Robert Pattinson. This is the film that has me saying “give Pattinson a chance as Batman.”

It’s far from the teen scene he is most known for, as he plays a small time crook named Connie Nikas. Nothing seems to be going well for Connie and that is amplified in the trip we go on with Connie in Good Time. The film opens with Nick Nikas in a therapy session. Nik is developmentally disabled and before he can really get into the session is yanked out by Connie who we find out is his brother.

From here the film really doesn’t slow down. Much like Uncut Gems, this is a fever of a film that doesn’t let go once it gets a hold onto you. After snatching Nick up, Connie has him help rob a bank. Things fall a part from there, though things may have already been falling a part for the Nikas brothers.

A small supporting cast joins with Pattinson and Safdie along their journey. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Connie’s girlfriend, even if her character’s wealthy mother doesn’t like the match. Barkhad Abdi of Captain Phillips fame plays a security guard that crosses paths with Pattinson and Buddy Durress is great as another criminal though I don’t want to give his character away as there is a fun twist there. The film really does belong to Pattinson. He has your attention every second he’s on screen as you keep catching yourself thinking “oh shit.” If Uncut Gems is cinematic cocaine, then Good Time is the first hit that got us there.

Good Time is currently streaming on Netflix!
