The late 1970s was when rap was really conceived and the 1980s gave birth to the genre. It was the 1990s when it really blossomed.

The ‘90s was an extremely influential time for the genre as the rap stars of the ‘80s (LL Cool J, Run-DMC, KRS-One) tried to find their place with the influx of fresh new talent ready to take over. Hard core gangsta rap began to slip in popularity similar to what happened to hair metal with the growing popularity of grunge music.

The decade saw the battle of East vs West go straight to the masses as the end of the ‘90s showed the South was here and not to be played with.

Today’s playlist highlights what could arguably be called the most important decade in rap and hip-hop, the 1990s. Whether you were Team Biggie or Team Pac, we can all agree how good the decade was for the genre.
