Nashville Reviews: Robert’s Grill (Mount Juliet)

Stoney Keeley heads out to the Gladeville area for a look at Robert's Grill.

Your dining options out in Gladeville are pretty limited. I mean, back in my day (I’m an old man), you ordered from the deli at Suggs Creek Market and that was about it unless you wanted to drive to Hermitage, Lebanon, or Murfreesboro. At least nowadays, you have The Glade Diner, Subway, and Hurt’s Hot Chicken (when he’s posted up at the Dollar General (also I should totally do a review of Subway)) to choose from. You can add Robert’s Grill to that list.

Let me try to manage expectations here, because it’s very important that you consider the context of this conversation. I don’t think you’re going to want to drive across the state to try the food truck at the gas station on the Gladeville side of Mount Juliet. Plus, you should also be warned that for the better part of two years now, we here at SoBros Network have been doing our due diligence in reviewing completely ordinary bar food. It’s kind of our thing to write about the everyday food out there.

So, to be out of town a ways? Hell yeah, it’s a solid meal. I can get good Mexican food without having to fight the Providence traffic? Hell yeah, that sounds like a deal. That’s what Robert’s Grill is about, and it’s damn good. Is it going to stack up next to Nectar, Nada, and Rose Pepper in Nashville? Nah, fam – but that’s not the appeal of a spot like this.

I’ve had it twice now, and each time, the quality of the meal has without a shadow of a doubt been at-least-I-didn’t-have-to-drive-into-Providence good. Pictured in this review are the shrimp and chorizo nachos and carne asada tacos. But, the first time I stopped by Robert’s I picked up an order of chorizo tacos (yes, I’m a big time chorizo guy).

LFG!

Food: 5.2/10 – No issues with the tacos at all. They are as good as you’ll get anywhere around. The chorizo packs a punch and makes for one helluva flavorful taco. As for the nachos, I thought they were pretty decent – maybe the combination of shrimp and chorizo wasn’t so good in hindsight, but that decision was on me. The chips were the big hang-up for me. I like the classic restaurant style tortilla chips, and these had the consistency of of something you’d buy in a bag at the grocery store. If they weren’t soaked in some of that good, good grease, I probably wouldn’t have even finished them all.

Value: 5.1/10 – For two tacos, my nachos, and an order of chips and queso, I spent a total of $24 (tip included). That’s pretty damn good compared to what you’ll pay going to a sit-down restaurant, or shit – even Taco Bell has gotten ‘spensive these days, too. Very comparable standard issue value here.

Overall: 5.15/10 – Don’t get it twisted. This is a solid meal, and I genuinely liked it for what it was. It’s not going to stack up against some of the great Mexican restaurants in town, sure, but it serves its purpose and plays its part well. If you’re out in the Gladeville area, you can’t beat the convenience. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick lunch spot, again, you can’t beat the convenience. My advice? Keep it simple with the tacos.
