No summer is complete if you live in the Hermitage area without frequent trips to Sips! I mean, hell, my fiancé and I are there at least once a week. That shaved ice is a cool taste of heaven, refreshing in the hot hot summer heat of Tennessee. I’m no doctor, but I think I might literally die in the summer time without having Sips right down the road from the house. That’s not hyperbole, either. We never engage in hyperbole on this site.
They also serve juice and coffee, but I’ve only ever driven through to get that sweet shaved ice goodness. Anyway, I thought I would share my findings with the community. That’s what good journalists do – report the news. And, folks, the news I have today is that Sips is good as hell. These are my findings after studying their assortment of flavors.
Sips! Flavor Power Rankings
11. Watermelon – I’m a big fan of watermelon flavor, and the flavor here is fine enough. But, man – a big cup full of watermelon is a lot of watermelon to take in. It wears on me after awhile.
10. Georgia Peach – As a big time fan of peach sodas, I was really hoping to like this one more than I did. It needs a little more potent pop before I can consider it among the elite. Still, an enjoyable treat.
9. Mango – Something about the mango tastes healthier than other fruits. I can’t explain it. Because of that, it’s going to rank lower on the list. I don’t need my shaved ice to nourish me. That’s not why we’re here.
8. Blue Coconut – Standard issue blue coconut here, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good. Just doesn’t do enough to stand out as one of the most popular summer flavors of all time.
7. Cola – When you think shaved ice, ‘cola’ probably isn’t your first thought. It is a little bit out of your usual comfort zone, but I tell you what, it is magic.
6. Root Beer – Root beer gets the edge over cola on pure flavor alone. I’m a big time root beer guy, prefer it over cola, so it stands to reason that root beer would rank higher on this list than cola. I’m nothing if not consistent.
5. Blackberry – I’m callin’ it now – blackberry is the dark horse on the Sips shaved ice menu. Blackberry is a big time summer flavor to begin with, and you wouldn’t normally think of it with shaved ice, but man – it is a match made in heaven.
4. Margarita – Maybe I’m a lush? Who thinks of margarita shaved ice? I don’t know the answer to these questions. No one does. But, what I know is that this tastes just as good as the real thing. Might I suggest the tiniest smidge of tequila to accompany it?
3. Tiger Blood – When I told my fiancé I was working on this article, she looked at me like I was an idiot and said, “um, everyone knows that Tiger Blood is the greatest flavor ever created.” I know Mose agrees, as we recently talked about it on an episode of the SoBros Power Hour. But, maybe this is a hot take – it’s a little overrated…just a little…in my opinion.
2. Dreamsicle – You can flavor just about anything Dreamsicle in the summer time and I’m going to be all in on it. The perfect combination of orange and cream, Dreamsicle is one of the longest running summer staples in the history of all human existence.
1. Banana – As a kid, Purity’s banana popsicles were the staple of my summer. I loved that shit. This banana flavor, in shaved ice form, tastes JUST like those Purity popsicles. So, for the flavor and the nostalgia, I can’t go with anything else for my top spot.
