Titans Ride a Big Day From Ryan Tannehill to 33-30 Victory Over Jags

The Tennessee Titans won a shootout against the Jacksonville Jaguars behind Ryan Tannehill's four-touchdown game.

If you watched the Tennessee Titans outlast the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-30 from Nissan Stadium earlier today, then you already know it was evident from the jump that the Jags were keyed in on stopping Derrick Henry. They did a pretty good job of that – not allowing him to find space, getting to him before he could really get going, and holding him to just 84 yards. But, good news for the Titans – (and this is something I feel like I’ve said all year now) they have a better passing attack than people seem to realize. Ryan Tannehill had a huge day, going 18/24 for 239 yards and FOUR touchdowns, for a passer rating of 145.7.

When asked about Tannehill’s big game in the post-game press conference Mike Vrabel chocked it all up to a monstrous team effort, saying that #17 got good protection, and guys did well in going up and attacking the football. He’s damn sure not wrong, either.

Jonnu Smith played well and created several mismatches for the Jags defense, and Tannehill did a great job of identifying that. Smith finished with four catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns in what was probably the best game of his career so far. He’s a play-maker. Corey Davis had his second consecutive game with a touchdown. In addition to his usual converting third downs, Adam Humphries also caught a BOMB of a touchdown on which Tannehill took a hell of a shot with Jaguar defenders draped all over him. Clutch city. Finally, I’d mention Anthony Firkser, who emerged as a legitimate move-the-chains option for this offense in this game today.

It was an indication of just how dangerous and multi-faceted this offense can be, and the Titans rode that wave to victory.

The Titans were gifted a field goal at the end of the first half due to a special teams gaffe by the Jags, and when it really counted, Stephen Gostkowski came through clutch, nailing a 49-yard field goal to put the Titans up 33-30. But, the reason they were able to hang around in this game was Tannehill and the Titans offense putting the team on its back. It was a performance that helped out a defense that, by and large, struggled to stop Gardner Minshew and James Robinson.

On defense, the Titans do have plenty to work out. The secondary is, as kindly as I can put it, a work in progress. Minshew was slicing and dicing in the second half, but as Vrabel pointed out in the press conference, “when they needed it, they got it.” The Titans won the turnover battle – Kristian Fulton registered his first career interception, and then with the game on the line, Jeffery Simmons batted a pass into the air that Harold Landry came down with.

Again, it ain’t always gonna be pretty, but the good teams find a way to win when they’re struggling.
