Back when Joe Staley announced he was retiring after a million years in the NFL, including a solid run as one of the best tackles in the NFL, a lot of folks wondered just what the hell the San Francisco 49ers would do to replace him. All they did was go out and trade for Trent Williams, giving up a fifth round pick in 2020 and a third round pick in 2021 to get a guy who has also been one of the premier tackles in the league for what feels like a bazillion years.
Now, Williams is no spring chicken either, but for a team that relied so heavily upon the run game, they pretty much HAD to go get a guy that could perform at the position, and in his first game with the 49ers, Williams showed that he is still capable of literal murder with his bare hands.
Trent Williams is a bad dude

That man is dead.
At the very least, he was dead for a little bit and finally came back. Someone call his family.
I obviously don’t know the 49ers playbook because, and some of you may not know this, I’m not actually a member of the San Francisco 49ers. I know some of my journalism comes off that way sometimes because I’m so knowledgeable about the NFL, but I do not play in the league. So, anyway, I can’t just assume that “get off the line and just fine someone to pancake” ISN’T in the playbook, but it doesn’t seem like the type of thing that is.
It looks like Williams just had the chance and wanted to flatten this poor soul. Like, he’s not even looking to make a play – this guy is just frozen in his tracks, and Trent Williams just steamrolls him.
Now, I guess the Cardinals got the last laugh because they won the game. I think Kyler Murray and company are going to be pretty damn fun to watch this season, but I also wonder if there is something to this Super Bowl loser hangover. I’ll say this – if there is, losing in Week 1 to a Cardinals team that won just five games a season ago is the first step to proving it.
