As a part of our annual Halloween #SpookySeason coverage, we’ve decided to open up a bit of our personal lives and share some scary stories – welcome to SoBros Scary Stories. These are full on eye witness accounts of spooky occurrences. So, get your popcorn ready. Feel free to pull these stories out around the campfire, too. Today, I’m going to talk about a story my dad told me about feeding the horses back in the day.

Well, well, well – here we are again. Time to fire the ol’ SoBros Scary Stories bit back up for 2020. I’ve written a bit about the house I grew up in, and some of the weird things that have happened there throughout my lifetime. But, today – we’re going to dive into one of my favorite stories that my dad used to always like to share when we started swappin’ scary stories with people.

I grew up on four acres of property out in Gladeville, Tennessee. It’s not so far away from everything that I’d consider it ‘isolated.’ I grew up next to a neighborhood of about a dozen houses – but one side of the property does back up to hundreds of acres of woods. It was…quiet. We’ll go with that.

My family always had animals while I was growing up – horses, chickens, geese, goats, rabbits, cats, dogs. A lot of critters that required feeding every day.

One cool fall night when I was in high school, my dad had arrived home from work. Before he could pull his shoes off and prop his feet up, he had to head down to the barn to make sure all the animals were fed. He had just poured out the last scoop and started walking back up towards the house when he noticed me walking through the kitchen, to the fridge, and then back out towards my room.

My mom was working late, so we had to figure out dinner on our own in his mind. He came back inside, walked out to my room to see what I wanted to eat, only to find that I wasn’t there.

No one was home except for my dad.

My mom was working late. I was hanging out at a friend’s house. Literally, no one was there except for my dad. When he first told me this story, I asked him how he knew it was me that walked through the kitchen, and he admitted that he didn’t get a good enough look – the figure just looked to be about my size and about my shape, so he just assumed it was me.

To this day, that one freaks me out.
