One of the consistent bright spots in what is a very disappointing year for the WWE is Elias. For the last year or two of his WWE run, more and more members of the WWE Universe have decided to “walk with Elias.” If you don’t following professional wrestling closely or at all, you certainly have not heard of the man formerly known as Heavy Metal Jesus.
Elias is the latest in a long run of professional wrestlers who have had the character of a singing wrestler. The difference between Elias and the likes of WWE Hall of Famers Honky Tonk Man and Jeff Jarrett is that he actually has the talent to pull the gimmick off. Fans first truly got to see Elias put his talents on display outside of a wrestling ring when he sat in at the Razoo Bar and Patio on Bourbon Street in New Orleans during Wrestlemania week in 2018. That performance was followed up by the release of his debut EP entitled Walk With Elias.
Elias was written off TV after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle and required surgery that was to keep him out of action for 6-9 months. During his hiatus, he worked on his latest EP Universal Truth and the hard work has paid off. The four-track EP shows off Elias’ talent outside of the squared circle. WWE’s music production group titled def rebel produced the EP and Elias, along with a group of writers, wrote three of the four songs. The fourth song is an odd rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
Overall, the new release is very solid and if WWE was smart, they would completely get behind the Elias character and strap a rocket to him as they say in the business, because he has proven over the last few years that he can really sing and play the guitar. Plus, he is excellent on the mic and can go in the ring. There isn’t necessarily a standout song on Universal Truth that will be sung by wrestling fans at live WWE shows all over the world for years to come, but it is evident that once his in ring career is over, Elias has something he can easily fall back on.
The EP is a mere 11 minutes from start to finish, and is just a glimpse into the musical abilities of Elias. After one listen, all skeptics will be ready to “walk with Elias.” @IAMEliasWWE
