Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 9

5. Kyren Williams, Notre Dame RB – That Notre Dame ground game is no joke, and I’m happy to see the Irish put the college football world on notice. Keep calling this team a pretender. Williams had 23 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns. That’s good enough for 6.1 yards per carry. Also, for those of you who keep up with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network every week, you’ll note that Williams isn’t the only Notre Dame player that I feel like deserves to be in the larger discussion (Ian Book). This team deserves some respect.

4. D’Eriq King, Miami QB – Lopsided Clemson loss aside, the Canes are still finding a way to hang around the top 10. I don’t think a 10-win season is out of the realm of possibility, especially if King continues to play like he did against NC State. King was 31/41 for 430 yards and five touchdowns, good for a 91.8 QBR. He was also Miami’s leading rusher with 105 yards on the ground.

3. Justin Fields, Ohio State QB – Fields is back and off to a roaring start, no doubt about that. On Saturday, he added SIX more total touchdowns to his resumé, going 24/28 for 314 yards, five passing touchdowns, and a touchdown run. But, let’s remember….it was Rutgers

2. Zach Wilson, BYU QB – I’m ready to full-blown say “let’s put Zach Wilson among the Heisman favorites.” The dude is just flat out getting shit done. BYU looks like a juggernaut, and with only North Alabama and San Diego State left on the schedule, there’s a good chance this team finishes 10-0 (we’ll have to see whether or not the Army game that was postponed actually happens). Against a ranked Boise State squad on Saturday, Wilson was 21/27 for 359 yards, two touchdowns, and another score on the ground. The Cougars routed the Broncos 51-17. Wilson is now 2nd in the FBS with 2,511 passing yards on the season.

1. Kyle Trask, Florida QB – Props to Trask, Dan Mullen, and the Florida Gators for effectively ending the season of the Georgia Bulldogs. Trask led the FBS in passing yardage this week, going 30/43 for a whopping 474 yards, four touchdowns, and one pick. I was told this was supposed to be the best defense in the country. Pure fireworks from the Gators, as they beat the Bulldogs 44-28 and moved up to #6 in the country. Trask is now tied for the FBS-lead with 22 passing touchdowns on the season.

In doing so, he reminded us that he’s not quite slipping out of the 2020 Heisman race just yet. He still very much belongs in the conversation.
