Thanksgiving 2020 – my, what a year…what a holiday…what a strange moment in time. You guys know why – I’m not going to put you all through that ringer yet again (obligatory mention of *unprecedented times*). Let’s just take a moment to put things into perspective and consider some of the things that we are thankful for.
Because we do still certainly have plenty to be thankful for and hope you do as well. But, everyone always says the same thing – they’re thankful for friends, family, food, their job, etc. etc.. I don’t think that’s reflecting deep enough. I think people need to go above and beyond when reflecting upon the year that was.
So, this is one of my favorite annual pieces, and with it being one of the only posts I’ve written for six years in a row now, it has a special place in my heart, too. It’s a big girthy one though (that’s what she said), so I’ll quit blubbering before I start crying and just let y’all read the article you came here for.
THINGS YOU DON’T REALIZE YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING 2020
Applebee’s – That’s right, I’m saying Applebee’s this year. Eatin’ good in the neighborhood used to mean something. We need to get back to those days. People take this place for granted, and you guys love to make it a punch line, but it rules, and I would literally die on that heel. Bourbon Street chicken and a big Brewtus of Sam Adams for life.
Backwoods Smokes – You can have your Black & Milds and your Swisher Sweets. But, I’m team Backwoods from here on out – not only do they have a better variety of flavors, but they taste more like actual tobacco and not like chemicals. Are there probably sticks and twigs and shit in ’em? Sure, but that’s beside the point. I mean, tobacco is bad and should never be consumed. That’s what I meant to say here.
Clove – I ranted about this on an old episode of the SoBros Hot Minute, but it’s perennially underrated. Y’all always get caught up in your pumpkins and your apples and your maples, but you completely lose sight of the clove and how it is one of the greatest fall seasonal flavors out there. Indulge yourself a bit and get some good old fashioned clove candy this holiday season.
*Disclaimer: I have been told that I am an old man when it comes to my sweets, so please take this with a grain of salt. I have been told that no one actually likes clove candy except for me.
Daniel Craig in Knives Out – Just such a good performance. Maybe we take Daniel Craig, in general, for granted. But, this particular performance was so much fun. The thick Southern drawl, the thrilling unfolding of events – it was all played to perfection.
Doctors and science – Okay, I just had to plant my tongue in my cheek and type this one out…some of y’all need to hear it. That’s all I’ll say about the pandemic, I swear.
Hot chicken game changers – Y’all are always talkin’ about your Prince’s and Bolton’s, but there are some relatively new hot chicken joints you need to be aware of, or at the very least, that you may not have heard of yet – Hurt’s Hot Chicken and Red’s 615 Kitchen. Both have unique flavors, and should be sought out IMMEDIATELY if you consider yourself a hot chicken aficionado.
Pumpkin bolognese jumbo shells – I’m tellin’ y’all….this recipe is other-worldly and life-changing. I’ve already made it twice this season. A good blend of fontina cheese, nutmeg, and pumpkin puree stuffed inside a jumbo shell and then baked in a homemade bolognese sauce. GTFOH – it’s both festive and delicious. I’ll be making this every autumn for the rest of my life.
Nature – Some of y’all just need to go the fuck outside some time. I mean, damn – all this fighting on the internet and there’s a beautiful world out there for us to explore. Get some fresh air, listen to the sound of the wind between the trees, watch a good sunset. Refresh and refocus.
Pilot G2 pens – I’ve been a big fan of the Pilot G2 since I got my first pack way back in the 8th grade. I wanted to love these new Sharpie gel pens so bad, but the Pilot G2 remains undefeated. It’s still the G.O.A.T. pen in my book – if you’ve never written with one before, this Thanksgiving, let me suggest that you try it. Cross it off your bucket list – ‘writing with a Pilot G2’ is something you MUST do before you die.
Tik Tok – Yes, you young folk are all about that Tik Tok, and I’ll admit….I was hesitant to join at 34 years old. But, I’m so glad I did. I virtually never pay attention to other social media platforms any more. I only get entertainment from Tik Tok and I’m completely happy with that – it’s amazing – I get new recipe ideas, I watch funny viral videos, I watch camping/outdoors videos. It’s actually a nice disconnect from the gutter ass streets of Twitter and toxic ass Facebook. They probably don’t want us old heads taking over the platform, but honestly, it was worth it to me.

Air
— sobrostan (@sobrostan) November 17, 2020
I’m so with this take, Stan. Everyone goes around their whole lives just breathing in all this air that literally keeps them alive, and not once have I heard anyone thank air. Everyone wants to thank a million people while they’re accepting their awards, but no one wants to shout out the very air that is keeping them alive. SMDH!
Air is very underrated.
From Olivia on Instagram: “Freely breathing and not having the moisture of your own breath trapped under your mask.”
Honestly, this is 100% the worst part about wearing a mask. If I have to wear one for too long, I have to wash it as soon as I get home before I can wear it again. There were times, during the summer especially, that between the sweat and the moisture of my own breath, the mask would be damp and wet when I finally got the chance to take it off. Just gross, gross stuff.
