It’s been a wild but fun year on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast. While I don’t want to speak for our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, the man whose namesake this show bears, I think it’s safe to assume that we’re both pretty proud of the work we’ve put in this year. We’re north of 30 episodes recorded and released in 2020, and shit – if you guys knew what we had going on in our personal lives this year, you’d feel pretty damn good about that too.
But, it wasn’t just the volume that gets me…it’s the way we made a concerted effort to break away from the routine weekly updates and box office news show and provide SoBros Nation with something different.
I think we did a decent job of that – pivoting from actor and filmmaker profiles, to ranking movies by genre, taking deep dives into franchises and movies. I hope you’ve all enjoyed digging into the movie world the same way we have. It’s felt incredibly rewarding to see the show grow over the last several months.
It’s been a good year, and while you’ve already read some of our actor and filmmaker profiles this week, along with our genre-based episodes, here are some of my favorite episodes from the year that don’t fit into those categories.
The Vick’s Flicks Podcast: Best of 2020
Ep. 38: Pixar – link – No one knows how to tug on the heart strings quite like Pixar does. It’s become one of my favorite brands in the movie world. Brandon and I got together back in March to dive into the history of Pixar in honor of Onward’s release.
Ep. 40: 28 Movies to Watch – link – This feels like forever ago. The beginning of the “quarantine” back in the spring. There wasn’t any real rhyme or reason to this one, we just got the SoBros team together and everyone picked some random ass movies that you should watch if you’ve never seen them before.
Ep. 42: DreamWorks – link – DreamWorks has carved out a massive audience of its own in the animation world. Not so different from the Pixar episode, Brandon and I dive into the rich filmography of DreamWorks.
Ep. 49: The Best Summer Movies – link – Warmer days may seem so far away as winter sets in for the season, but you can get ready for the summer in your minds while listening to Brandon and I break down exactly what constitutes a “summer movie,” and we list some of our favorite ones.
Ep. 60: The Atlanta Film Festival (2020) – link – We worked our way into several film festivals this year since many elected to conduct them virtually. But, Atlanta was special for me because it was the first one that I really pitched in on and reviewed a couple of flicks myself. Brandon and I got together to compare notes on the festival and talk about what we saw.
Ep. 62: The Nashville Film Festival (2020) – link – It’s always going to be our “home festival” and this year was no different. Brandon shares his experience at this year’s Nashville Film Fest and reviews each movie he saw as apart of it.
Ep. 64: Home Alone – link – A bit of a behind the scenes look here, but this was actually our way of testing a new format for a potential new podcast that we’d like to run in the future. It was a home run in my book – one of the most fun shows we’ve done to date. Brandon, Brittany, and I dig into the history of Home Alone and explore how and why it became such a cultural phenomenon all these years later.
