Well, here we folks. The 2021 National Championship Drinking Game – and this really strange and surreal covid season of college football is in the books. We say it every year, but it sure is bittersweet, isn’t it? It is literally the most meaningful game of the entire season. The stakes could not be any higher, but by the same token, it also means it’s our final live college football viewing experience of the season. We’re poised for another lengthy offseason after tonight, but it does provide us with an opportunity to look back at the season and reflect upon all the fun we had along the way.

For the Alabama Crimson Tide, it’s been a banner year on offense. Quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver DeVonta Smith were BOTH Heisman finalists, with Smith taking home the hardware. It’s been business as usual, by and large, for Nick Saban and this program – they marched through the regular season undefeated and are back in the National Championship after taking a back seat to that historic run that LSU Tigers team went on in 2019. Hell, Saban has even lost another assistant already! Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is headed to Texas after tonight’s game. In an odd season, things have been pretty routine for the Tide.

Then, you have the Ohio State Buckeyes. These kids didn’t know if they’d even have a season back in August. Finally, the Big Ten did the right thing and put the product on the field. The Buckeyes only played in six games, but impressed the committee enough to land a playoff spot. On principle alone, that’s not the call I would’ve made (I would’ve gone #1 Alabama, #2 Clemson, #3 Texas A&M, #4 Notre Dame). But, no one can deny that the way they dominated the Clemson Tigers validated that they belonged among the best teams in the country. Quarterback Justin Fields put on a legendary performance against the Tigers, and has his sights set on the NFL next season. Dude’s a stud, and is going to give Alabama fits tonight.

Everyone talked about some crazy stuff happening, but I figured that programs with winning cultures firmly installed and stability in leadership positions would be the ones best suited to navigate the covid pandemic, and here we are. Alabama opened as a 7.5-point favorite, but that number has climbed out to -9. Kinda wild to see anyone favored by nine in a National Championship, but it’s a testament to just how dominant this Tide team has been.

Personally, I think the Buckeyes play the brand of offense that can score with this historic Tide offense. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one go either way, but I’m saying Tide by a touchdown in a surprising shootout. An over/under of 75 points also sounds insane, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this teams put a hundred points on the board either.

It’s going to be a fun one. Let’s get to the 2021 National Championship Drinking Game! LFG!

2021 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DRINKING GAME

TAKE A DRINK IF/WHEN…

  • Someone mentions Nick Saban’s five titles – did y’all know he’s won five titles?
  • Someone calls the Buckeyes “dangerous.”
  • You hear the word ‘covid.’ Get a DD lined up for this rule.
  • The “NFL talent” on the field is mentioned.
  • Any player registers a sack or an interception.
  • Someone mentions Cardale Jones, Urban Meyer, or the 2015 Sugar Bowl.
  • Mac Jones throws a touchdown.
  • Justin Fields throws a touchdown
  • DeVonta Smith catches a pass.
  • You can clearly see the veins in Trey Sermon’s arms.
  • Najee Harris rushes for 10+ yards.
  • Tuf Borland makes a tackle – hell, take two drinks. That’s tough. Just like the name ‘Tuf.’
  • Same for Dylan Moses – take another drink if/when they mention his comeback from injury.
  • Chris Olave catches a pass.
  • Bryce Young is on the field for a play.

TAKE A SHOT IF/WHEN…

  • They actually hit the over (75).
  • Someone mentions Ohio State being the “11th ranked team” according to Dabo Swinney.
  • Either quarterback – Fields or Jones – puts five total touchdowns on the board.
  • They catch Sark eating a booger in the booth again.
  • The game ends. That’s right, folks. It’s a bittersweet day. We won’t witness another college football game until late August/early September. No matter who your team is, who you were rooting for in this game, or what – raise a glass, make a toast to this wonderful sport we love, and drink to another fun season in the books.

As usual, stay safe and responsible out there. If you drink, don’t drive. Do the watermelon crawl.
