Shadow in the Cloud, Movie Review

"Shadow in the Cloud is a lot of things, but one thing it's not is boring."

In Shadow in the Cloud, Chloë Grace Moretz is a blue-ribbon badass playing a WWII pilot named Maude who jumps on a bomber plane right before take-off carrying a highly confidential package. The male chauvinist crew isn’t very welcoming and have their suspicions about her and what she’s brought onboard. But everyone on this flight from hell will soon have more to worry about once Maude spots a creature on the outside clawing away pieces of the plane.

A lot of this nutso narrative is confined to a cockpit where Maude is shoved into. It’s quite tense and effective as we only witness what she sees, hears and fears. And the entire time she’s shouting out warnings – she’s believed by no one. What a bunch of dumbasses. Co-writer/director Roseanne Liang kicks up it a notch when Shadow in the Cloud goes from horror to straight up frantic action as the crew fight for their lives against a Japanese ambush and a hideous gremlin. Now that’s two hellish villains right there.

There’s no denying its pulpy B-movie style and silliness. Fair warning that unintentional laughing is likely to occur. However, it’s also a wild, thrilling ride in the skies fueled by feminism. Liang doesn’t waste a second of her hasty 83 minutes and the crazier, the better. Shadow in the Cloud is a lot of things, but one thing it’s not is boring. We get to reap the benefits of a war and monster movie mashup that’s lost its marbles.
