I’ve been a big Mac Jones guy from the jump. Even prior to his incredible 2020 campaign with the Alabama Crimson Tide, I felt like he was more than capable of surprising folks, and thought he was the guy to get the job done, even with “the next Lamar Jackson” creeping up behind him on the depth chart. And, what happens? He goes out and has himself a Heisman-nominated season. He completed 77.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. People get so caught up in the “yeah, buts” with Jones. “Well, look at all the NFL talent around him…” or “Look at the offensive line blocking for him” are just a couple of examples. But, his entire career, he’s just kept getting the job done.
And, for that, he’s actually my QB2 heading into the 2021 NFL Draft. People seem to be getting so caught up in being dynamic and having hyper-athletic traits that they lose sight of good old-fashioned quarterbacking. Hell, look who won the last Super Bowl – Tom Brady. So, while sure – it would be nice to have a Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson – that mold is not the only one that can still win in the NFL. I love that Jones was in firm command of that Alabama offense in 2020. I love that he can make every throw in the book. He is elite when it comes to completing passes. And, all he’s done is win. Kirk Herbstreit called Jones “a surgeon.” That’s badass. “Well look at all the NFL talent around him…” – duh, what do you think is going to be around him when he actually gets to the NFL? Why are we knocking him for that? Just watch the guy play – he looks like the quintessential pocket quarterback. That didn’t used to be a knock on a guy.
The San Francisco 49ers recently rocked the NFL world when they traded their 12th overall pick, a third round compensatory pick in 2022, and first round picks in 2022 and 2023 to the Miami Dolphins to move up to third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Shortly after that happened, speculation began running rampant that they mortgaged the future to come up and snag Jones. Now, that’s far from set in stone. We still have a couple more weeks to go before the NFL Draft, and it’s possible that they go with Justin Fields or Trey Lance instead. But, a cerebral quarterback for a cerebral head coach sure sounds like an excellent fit. In Kyle Shanahan‘s system, Jones could flourish. Jones is a heady quarterback, that can make any throw in the book. Just what the 49ers need. “Look at the offensive line blocking for him” – yeah, let’s revisit that one. Should he land in San Francisco, he’s going to have one of the better lines in the league blocking for him. This is the stars aligning, folks.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what we think. It might sound crazy to most of the analysts and armchair quarterbacks, but it damn sure doesn’t sound crazy to the San Francisco 49ers if this is who they shelled out all those first rounders for. Whoever drafts him is obviously going to love him and believe in him. You want to take him at third overall and build a team around him? You damn sure won’t hear me saying that’s a bad idea.
