The 2021 NFL Draft takes place April 29-May 1 this year, emanating LIVE from Cleveland, Ohio. As it stands, the Tennessee Titans have one first round draft pick. General manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel currently hold the 22nd overall selection. Over the next few weeks, your boy “Big Natural” Stoney Keeley will be taking a look at some of the prospects who are either rumored to be tied to or who make sense for the Titans. Today, we’re lookin’ at Florida wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
Coming off his best season in the NFL yet, Corey Davis walked into free agency and landed with the New York Jets, leaving a massive hole behind him opposite A.J. Brown. The Titans signed Josh Reynolds in free agency, but he’s better suited to be a WR3 than WR2. Factor in that the team also lost Jonnu Smith, and you realize that this offense is in need of some juice. But, that doesn’t mean that they have to go out and get a Davis clone. They just have to get production. That don’t have to go get a big, physical receiver. They just have to make sure that whoever they add can get the job done – catch balls, move chains, score points. That simple.
And, that’s why I love Kadarius Toney and his fit with the Titans so much. There really doesn’t seem to be much that this kid can’t do. He is as fast as lightning, and he uses that speed to create separation upon engaging defensive backs. Once he sees how a corner or safety is going to play him, he jukes, and turns in the opposite direction of the DB’s hips. He’s shifty, nimble, and his ability to cut and turn direction on a dime is downright lethal. He might be the best juke guy in this entire draft.
There doesn’t appear to be a lot of nuance in his route-running. He more or less seems to react to what opposing defensive backs are doing with their hips, and adjusts accordingly. That’s not to say that he can’t run good routes. That’s just to say that he looks like a reactive player. Overall, I don’t see a whole hell of a lot of weaknesses in Toney’s game. His physical attributes will translate well in one-on-one situations in the NFL, and it’s easy to see how the Titans could use a guy with such ability. A lot of folks are projecting Toney as a slot guy in the NFL, but I think he’s the perfect Swiss Army Knife that you can line up anywhere to make plays. He’s even played a bit out of the backfield at Florida, and played quarterback some in high school. Toney would be the perfect complement to the other guys in this Titans receiving corps, and would give the passing attack a dynamic it hasn’t had in quite some time.
