Mount Juliet Reviews: Gourmet Donuts

Stoney Keeley heads out to Gourmet Donuts for the latest edition of Mount Juliet Reviews.

There’s just nothing quite like a good old-fashioned donut shop on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Strolling in, smelling the fresh donut goodness, stacking a box six deep full of decadent unhealthy donuts, eating all six when really you should only have one or two tops. That’s the American way, people. My fiancé and I moved to Mount Juliet back in January, and Gourmet Donuts has become our go-to weekend indulgence spot. Recently, we loaded up a sixer (picture below) that included a coconut-topped donut, raspberry jelly filled, Boston creme, two red velvet cream cheesers, and of course, the maple bacon donut. We drove out to the lake, and had quite the peaceful morning, sitting and stuffing our faces with donuts as Mother Nature sang her sweet, sweet song. Highly recommend it. I don’t see that Gourmet Donuts has a website or a Facebook page or anything – that’s how you know they’re bona fide. They don’t need no stinkin’ online presence. Anyway, I guess you can check out the Google search results for the place here.

Just look at that selection – I hear the cherry fritters are fantastic.

Food: 4.3/10 – I mean, it’s a donut shop. The donuts are phenomenal – those red velvet donuts were otherworldly. I’m not usually a cake donut guy, but those things ruled. Red velvet cake, and glazed too – with a giant dollop of cream cheese in the middle. Cloud nine, y’all. But, for me – it’s their bacon maple donut that steals the show. I get that one every time I go into Gourmet Donuts. It’s their signature glazed donut, that’s already a stone cold killer in its own right, with maple frosting. But, what sets it apart from other maple bacon donuts is that they use actual slices of bacon to top the donut….not just veritable bacon bits like most places. It’s so damn good. I docked ’em huge points for their breakfast sandwiches, though – I got a sausage, egg, and cheese that was pretty dry and pretty cold. It’s the only time I’ve tried it, and I am a firm believer in “three strikes and you’re out,” so I’ll probably give ’em two more tries. Maybe I fucked up and got something too late in the morning, or maybe I was supposed to specifically request that the sandwich be warmed up. I don’t know, but that sucker was hard to choke down.

Value: 6.87/10 – Just a stupid good value for quality donut shop donuts that you can’t just buy out of a box at the grocery store. I have fed my fiancé and my mother at the same damn time….that’s right….three people…for less than $15, tip included. I don’t give a shit what anyone says – you can’t find much better value than that.

Overall: 5.59/10 – I love Gourmet Donuts as a weekend treat. It is great for what it is – a donut shop with a wide variety of donuts and pastries, and ice cold Purity chocolate milk in the fridge. But, let’s not get carried away and put it in the conversation with some of the town’s elite dining experiences. For what it is, I would probably concede that it is absolutely the best donut in town (sorry, Donut Time). As far as breakfast spots go, it’s not somewhere you round up the family to go out for a nice breakfast, but it is my first choice when we have guests visiting in town and I don’t want to cook breakfast. Nice, easy, and the best donuts in town, baby. It’s great that we have a truly old-fashioned donut shop like this in town.
