We all took notice of Lindsay Lohan when she got nasty in Mean Girls. We all need to pay attention to Emma Stone because she is the reason Easy A is an enjoyable high school comedy with intelligence and sass. Olive (Stone) tells a lie to her friend about losing her virginity to a college guy and that lie starts the rumors and almost instantly she is the high school slut. But, she is able to use the high school rumor mill to her advantage and not only finds a way to help those less unfortunate for the right price, but she flaunts her new status loud and proud. What makes this whole movie funny and interesting is how the rumors change every time it is told to another person, and the fact that Olive is far from who her fellow students think she is. Rumors and status are the harsh reality of high school and Olive soaks it all in, but it may cost her more than she ever imagined.
Stone came in to our lives by appearing in the surprise hit Superbad. Then last year, she put another surprise hit under her belt with Zombieland. Now her name is headlining in Easy A and this is her breakout role. She gets to show how smart she is when it comes to comedy and how terrifically witty she can be. The only other actors who compete with her when it comes to funniness are Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson who play her parents. They have a laid back attitude and are unconventional, but are loving and have such a way with words. They are awesome.
Director Will Gluck has made a teen comedy that does not mind being raunchy but it is for all the right reasons. It is a teen version of The Scarlett Letter (which plays its part in the movie). We all remember how the atmosphere of high school felt like and the different cliques that made up the school. Of course, there were always rumors about people, and who knows how crazy or untrue they were by the time they got to the tenth person?
Easy A puts a spin on those days and how one girl handled it all. Unlike Lohan, Emma Stone has a bright future if she makes the right choices—professionally and personally. This movie needed her and she delivers. She brings laughs, emotion and some attitude to a girl who does not mind pretending to have sex with you. All she asks for in return is the credit and a gift card.
