Back in the day during normal years, Memorial Day always represented the beginning of the Summer Blockbuster season at the box office, but this again like last year is anything but normal. Looking at the titles still to come, it is seeming more and more like this is the beginning of the Summer Blockbuster season for album releases. From the Black Keys to J.Cole, there is plenty of options for your listening enjoyment, as well as debut outings from hip-hop duo Paris Texas and indie-pop trio SHAED. Push play on some of these great albums and begin making your summer playlist.
St. Vincent Daddy’s Home
Former Polyphonic Spree member Annie Clark gets romantic on her latest album Daddy’s Home. The singer better known as St. Vincent began writing her love letter to New York in the early 1970s after her father was released from federal prison after doing a stint for his part in a multi-million dollar stock manipulation scheme.
Daddy’s Home draws extremely vivid pictures of what life in the Big Apple was like during that time. Long gone are the long guitar riffs and solos Clark has become known for. She has replaced them with instruments that were very popular during that time including the sitar which is the true star of “Live in the Dream” and feels plucked right from the minds of Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd is the only ‘70s era artist that provides inspiration on the album. Everyone from David Bowie to Chaka Khan to even B.J. Thomas can be found sprinkled throughout the album. The album is a psychedelic, experimental tour de force that will leave fans exhilarated. @st_vincent
The Black Keys Delta Kream
The Nashville-by-way-of-Akron duo The Black Keys have set their sights on the blazing Mississippi delta summer sun on their new album Delta Kream. The duo recorded the album full of old North Mississippi blues classics over two days in Music City with the help of other local musicians.
Delta Kream is the follow up to 2019’s Let’s Rock which was a return to their blues heavy style of garage rock. The duo consisting of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney enlisted some big help on their 10th studio album to help them cover some North Mississippi blues greats. The guys brought in R.L. Burnside’s guitarist Kenny Brown and Junior Kimbrough’s bassist Eric Deaton to help pay homage to some of the genre’s legends.
The John Lee Hooker classic “Crawling Kingsnake” is the perfect choice to start the album off and truly shows the band is excited to get back to their roots. @theblackkeys
