G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra offers more thrills and entertainment than I ever expected. It’s a summer movie and does not hide the fact that it wants to simply entertain. Most people know of G.I. Joe and it’s ever so popular Hasbro toys and television show. But keep in mind, this movie is made for this decade. It is up-to-date in technology and the character’s fancy outfits. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has an exaggerated reality and over-the-top action sequences, but it sure is fun to watch.
This movie focuses on the battle between G.I. Joe and the Cobra organization. James McCullen (aka Destro) is using a nanotechnology to create soldiers and use nuclear warheads to send a message to people all over the world. And the brains behind the operation is, of course, the Doctor (soon to become Commander Cobra played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt). So it is up to Duke (Channing Tatum), Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), and the rest of the G.I. Joe, led by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), to fight against the evil Cobra organization, and stop their attack on the world.
The story is fairly simple, but there are some sub-plots that involve the history between Duke and Cobra, and the relationship between Duke and Baroness. I never knew the many connections between the Cobra organization and G.I. Joe. I really do think someone knows at least one person on the conflicting team or is related to them. Stephen Sommers directed this movie and his name may seem familiar. He has directed a couple of box office summer hits before: The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. And just like you got involved in the world of The Mummy, you must be able to do the same for G.I. Joe.
Sommers shoots this movie in a way that’s similar to being on a thrill ride. This is not one of those plots that keep logic in perspective. You just have to simply sit back and enjoy. Overall, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a fun movie for the summer. We can all probably guess how the movie goes and what will happen. It is one you should take lightly, but there is no way you will be bored.
