I Don’t Hate the Idea of the Titans Adding Richard Sherman

Folks are pointing out that Richard Sherman to the Tennessee Titans makes a ton of sense, and I don't necessarily disagree.

I swear the folks at TitansWire don’t sleep. They’re just online 24/7 waiting for some sort of news to drop on the Tennessee Titans. Somebody says something about Derrick Henry? BOOM – 500-word article is up instantly. A free agent at a position of need is still out there? BOOM – article. Some dude at Bleacher Report said that Richard Sherman would be a good fit for the Titans since they have $9M in cap space left over? You better believe Mike Moraitis’ ass is all over it! These people don’t sleep, I tell ya. But, in this case, I think it’s a pretty interesting take…one that I wanted to weigh in on. I honestly feel like cornerback isn’t really that big of a need anymore. Like a lot of spots on the roster, it could use another veteran in the mix. But, by and large, they have some talent and numbers there. It’s kind of lazy, to me, to look at the situation and just say, “oh, well they ONLY have Jackrabbit, and what happens if Caleb Farley can’t play?” But, that doesn’t stop people from calling Ryan Tannehill a game manager, so why would it stop ’em from missing on the current Titans secondary? Moraitis did a good job of cleaning up that sloppy Bleacher Report take and putting relevant context to it.

If the Titans can squeeze him in financially and Sherman understands the worst-case scenario is a potential backup role, bringing him to Nashville would be a good move.

Not only does he add veteran leadership and some extra feistiness to a young group, but he would also help shore up a secondary that, as we said before, has plenty of question marks.

I think the appeal of signing Sherman isn’t that he fills an immediate need. It’s what he adds to a promising young secondary in those leadership skills. Sherman gets a bad rap because he owned the soul of Michael Crabtree on live television, and people still remember that. Sure, he’s a brash, in-your-face guy, but I implore you to take the time to learn about Richard Sherman and you’ll find a high character guy. The Titans could use some of that attitude – just look at the signing of Jenkins. It’s obvious this coaching staff thinks that unit needs an injection of feisty aggression and confidence. That’s Sherman! That’s Sherman to a T, and he’s shown that he can still go on the field.

Can they make it happen with the money they have left? Sure – should they disregard more pressing needs? I’d say not. I still want a splash defensive lineman and another veteran edge rusher to bolster that front seven (helloooooo Melvin Ingram). Believe it or not, I’m actually okay with what they have at tight end. Point is, adding Sherman wouldn’t be at the top of my priority list just because of the numbers at cornerback, but if the available defensive talent starts finding homes, why not spend the money to bring the guy in? It makes a ton of sense, and if you don’t see that, I’m going to go out on a limb and say you just don’t like Richard Sherman.
