It’s Friday the 13th and there is a scary amount of new music out today. A Tony Award winner releasing his latest album and a multi-Grammy winner dropping a new song are among some of the higher profiled artists out with new music this week. In addition to Dear Evan Hansen’s Ben Platt and flute aficionado Lizzo’s new releases, there are new releases from Iggy Azalea, the Killers, and Dan+Shay.
No matter how you celebrate this unofficial but should be official holiday, it is paramount that you have a killer playlist on hand to make sure you survive and make it to the sequel. Whether you are trekking in the woods of the Black Hills or strolling the streets of Haddonfield, Illinois, make sure to push play on some of the great new music out this week.
Anna Thompson “Hot Now”
Rising pop-star Anna Thompson has been building an impressive number of fans and followers on social media over the last few years after being rejected by a record label that claimed, “she wasn’t famous enough.” She has since amassed a large army of believers online. Tik Tok is where Anna has truly gained the most attention and it should not come as a surprise as the app has helped raise the status of artists like Doja Cat and Megan thee Stallion. The video sharing app forced the Seattle based singer to fast forward the release of her debut EP Centerpiece earlier this year because of her song “Get Me High” going viral through the app.
Only a few months removed from the release of Centerpiece, Anna is releasing a brand new song that is ready to go viral again in the footsteps of some of her other releases. “Hot Now” finds the singer dealing with all the people that come out of the woodworks celebrities deal with once they begin to garner some recognition and fame. Thompson also sings about the wannabes coming from everywhere ready to hitch their wagon to her and ride her coattails.
Anna Thompson brings some fresh air to the world of pop music and is eager to add her name to the amazing list of artists from Seattle.
GosT Rites of Love and Reverence
It is only fair that if you are going to review new music on the sacred holiday that is Friday the 13th that you review music that belongs to the darkness of such a day.
Synthwave artist GosT has built a career in music blending his love of the occult, 80’s slasher films, and especially John Carpenter, into his own sound. The electronic producer has switched from electro-house to industrial to hardcore and heavy metal throughout his albums and his latest release finds him straddling between synth-pop and industrial as his early influences from Depeche Mode, the Cure, and Human League shine through the record.
Lyrically, Rites of Love and Reverence is at heart an album about the tragedies women have faced throughout history, mainly focusing on the accusations of witchcraft. The lyrics detail some of the atrocities committed on women throughout time. The new album is not as aggressive as past releases but is an excellent follow-up to 2019’s Valediction.
Rites of Love and Reverence, as well as previous GosT albums, would be a perfect soundtrack for your walk around the lake at Camp Crystal Lake tonight. @gost1980s
