First of all, I’m polishing this article off at nearly midnight after I’ve been out all night drinking. So, if it sucks – don’t blame me. Blame the people who kept handing me beers at Americanafest last night. Though we’re only two games into the season and there’s plenty of football left to play, one of the more interesting developments on this Tennessee Titans team is the emergence of second-year cornerback Kristian Fulton as the team’s best corner. Throughout the summer, we thought the vision for this defense would be Jackrabbit Jenkins on one side, Caleb Farley on the other, and Fulton in the slot. But, it became pretty clear throughout training camp that this coaching staff was going to ease Farley into his NFL career, relying on Fulton to step up on the outside in the meantime. Now, he’s playing so well that it has afforded the Titans the opportunity to be a little more patient with Farley. There’s absolutely no need to rush him in there, and hell – I’d go as far as to say that it would be foolish to pull Fulton out of the lineup at this point.
He impressed as a lone bright spot out of that game against the Arizona Cardinals, during which the Titans collectively shit the bed. Matched up primarily on veteran AJ Green, Fulton had a couple of impressive and timely pass break-ups that demonstrated his ability to muddy up a receiver’s catch window.
Then, there was Sunday against a younger, bigger, and more physical specimen in Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. Metcalf was jawing all day long, but Fulton didn’t take the bait. He was the proverbial fly at the proverbial picnic. Metcalf finished the game with six receptions for just 53 yards – no reception longer than 16 yards, but he had no success whatsoever when matched up opposite Fulton.

Lol at that PFF score – if you’ve ever wondered why people have to preface their sharing of PFF scores with “for what it’s worth,” Fulton’s grade on Sunday is a good example of why. He also added another pass break-up to his stat line for 2021, bringing his total to three on the season (1st on the team, T-5th in the NFL). He’s playing sticky, calm, and disruptive – just totally locking dudes down so far this season. It’s a testament to the importance of getting a good, proper offseason and a full summer’s worth of work in. Titans fans who were worried about this secondary can breathe a bit of a sigh of relief for now. We’re seeing Kristian Fulton emerge as one of the best young corners in the game right before our very eyes.
