Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.
*How do we feel about these cupcake games so late in the season? A lot of the SEC basically took the week to fine tune some things before rivalry week – Georgia, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Personally, I’m okay with it. I want rivalry week to be as good as possible – let these teams sharpen their skills and get right. And, it just may give me a Saturday to be lazy and go do some light shopping or something instead of staying glued to my television. Until they do away with these cupcake games altogether, teams are going to continue to do this before their biggest games of the season.
*After watching Alabama-Arkansas and Ohio State-Michigan State, I don’t think there’s any doubt that the Ohio State Buckeyes are the 2nd best team in the country right now. I’ve talked about Alabama’s problems on this column and on the College Football Roundup podcast for the last several weeks, and I think if the two teams met right now, the Buckeyes would smoke them. After struggling to put away a scrappy Arkansas team, I don’t know how any Alabama Crimson Tide fan can feel confident in this team beating Georgia. Then again, I don’t think you ever count a Nick Saban-coached team out of any one game. The nation is not feeling sorry for ‘Bama fans right now, though.
*That said, the Michigan Wolverines have a tremendous opportunity to throw a huge wrench into the College Football Playoff plans. Saturday’s game against Ohio State has massive stakes, as the winner will head to the Big Ten Championship, and will be in a prime position to get one of the four playoff spots, and the loser’s season is effectively done. I don’t think they get it done, but wouldn’t it be crazy if this was finally the year that Jim Harbaugh put it all together? When he’s essentially on his coaching death bed, he pulls an Undertaker and rises up to chokeslam the haters. It would be a crazy story – you have to admit that much.
*Welp….it was fun while it lasted for the Oregon Ducks, and really, the Pac-12 playoff hopes as a whole. They are officially done barring some sort of chaos in front of them. If you read my picks in last week’s Tank the 401k gambling column, I thought this was a tough spot for the Ducks, on the road in an environment that is underrated among college football home crowds, against an offense that was well-balanced, and a defense that was capable of forcing Oregon to throw the ball to beat them. And, what happened? They got caught. If this was their only loss, they might be alright. But, you can’t lose to a terrible Stanford team and then still expect to be in the race. In all likelihood, they’ll get another crack at Utah in the Pac-12 Championship, but it’ll be too little too late.
*Another week, and I am once again reminding you that the door is wide open for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish – honestly, the way things are shaking down, I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see a Georgia, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Notre Dame playoff. Notre Dame is going to finish 11-1 with no conference championship. Ohio State’s going to win the Big Ten. Georgia is going to eliminate Alabama….and there it is…Notre Dame is going to be one of the last four teams standing. The haters will be shaking.
*Finally! The Cincinnati Bearcats get those style points against a good team that we had been banking on. I don’t want to outright call SMU frauds….but look at their schedule…they just hadn’t played a defense as good as Cincinnati’s all season long. I thought this was a prime opportunity for the Bearcats to get things right and blow this team’s back out (again, if you’re not already, be sure to read Tank the 401k each week). They did just that, and now, a scrappy, overachieving East Carolina team and Houston are all that stands between them and a (likely, in my opinion) playoff berth.
*For those of you who might’ve been focused on the bigger games and might’ve missed it, UAB-UTSA was awesome. It was a real nail-biter (especially if you’re a degenerate like me that had the UTSA moneyline in a parlay). It was a real ass beater back and forth with multiple lead changes and two strong defenses playing their brand of football. A real gut check type of game for the now 11-0 UTSA Roadrunners. We even saw a dude’s ass, MEEP MEEP.

I’m sorry, but getting pantsed will never NOT be funny. Call me a child. I accept it. At least I know who I am. Also, I really thought that tweet would do numbers. Thought it was hilarious, and that was the type of content that people wanted out of me. But, no one gave a shit. Massive L.
*I know you were all on the edge of your seats for the latest installment of The Civil ConFLiCT. Well, UCF ran away with this one, beating UConn 49-17. Jim Mora, Jr. can’t get here quick enough.

*Eliminated from CFP contention: I think we’re essentially down to seven teams competing for four spots. This week, in addition to Oregon, we saw the playoff hopes end for the Michigan State Spartans, who just couldn’t get anything going against Ohio State, and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, who played the best defense they’ve played all season and got stuffed. Like the Pac-12, the ACC is COOKED. Insert *you are the weakest link, goodbye* soundbite.
*Conference championship match-ups based on current standings (I just think these are funny and/or interesting to lookout throughout the season, so figured I’d share ’em with y’all):
- AAC: Houston vs. Cincinnati
- ACC: Wake Forest vs. Pitt
- Big 12: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
- Big Ten: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin
- C-USA: Western Kentucky vs. UTSA
- MAC: Miami (OH) vs. Northern Illinois
- MWC: Boise State vs. San Diego State
- Pac-12: Oregon vs. Utah
- SEC: Georgia vs. Alabama
- Sun Belt: Appalachian State vs. Louisiana
*Personally, my top college football top 10 would look like this:
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- Alabama
- Cincinnati
- Michigan
- Notre Dame
- Oklahoma State
- Oregon
- Michigan State
- Ole Miss
