The Proposal is another romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock. Don’t get me wrong – I have liked some of her rom-com movies, but she does a lot of them. Some are good while others are predictable and boring. This one is predictable, but offers a lot through the casting of the movie. I am mainly talking about three people: Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty White.

The story is about a book editor (Bullock) who is referred to as “it” around her office. Her assistant (Reynolds) is good at his job. His dream is to get his own book published one day. But without a day off in three years, trying to stay on track and continue putting up with “it” is difficult to do. But when she is going to get deported back to Canada, her only plan is to marry her assistant. So, they have to go back to his home in Alaska and pretend to be a couple that is getting married and that love each other. It’s a tough gig.

Reynolds and Bullock’s chemistry is strong, which helps get past the predictability of the movie. Bullock is funny and tries to be nasty, but it works for just a little bit. Let’s just face it – Bullock can’t be a meanie. And Reynolds has the quick wit and smart remarks. Their humor together brings this movie to a higher level. Then there is White. She plays Reynold’s grandmother who is turning 90 years old. White is actually 87 years old, but you would never know it. She still has her humor and can’t help but steal the scenes she is in. You can’t help but adore her.

The Proposal is an above average romantic comedy. I can’t say that you won’t see where it’s going before it ever gets there. It is predictable for sure. But the way director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) gets us to its ending and the situations along the way are funny. Reynolds and Bullock are good in it. The movie works because of them. The movie is using a repeated formula, but you still find yourself attentive and entertained. Do yourself a favor and just go see it if it only for White. She’s a legend and a sweetheart.
