Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.
*Welp. Another “Championship Saturday” is in the books, and as far as chaos goes, it was far less chaotic than it could’ve been. The Michigan Wolverines absolutely handled their business in the Big Ten Championship in a spot that a lot of folks had them on upset alert in. They punched their ticket to the College Football Playoffs in the process. The winner of the SEC Championship was destined for the tournament, but the field would’ve looked different had the Georgia Bulldogs been able to win the game. The Alabama Crimson Tide pulled off the biggest upset of the weekend in winning that game. And, the Cincinnati Bearcats handled their business as well, finishing the 2021 campaign undefeated. Those are you four playoff teams, and all in all, I think the committee got it right with those four this year. I feel like I’ve been banging the drum, raging against the machine if you will, against a four-team playoff for the better part of the last seven years, but this year – nothing. The choice was easy, and it was made correctly.
*Brent Venables has long been one of the most sought after assistant coaches in the game for all of his work with Dabo Swinney as the defensive coordinator of the Clemson Tigers. It appears the timing is finally right, as he appears to be heading west to take the head job with the Oklahoma Sooners. The Tigers had a down year overall, but their defense was still the strength of the team. We’ll see if the wait was worth it for Venables, and we’ll what his chops are like as a program-builder because that Oklahoma program is going to need blowing up and rebuilding.
*The rumor mill is firing up over Mario Cristobal potentially leaving the Oregon Ducks to head across the country to coach the Miami Hurricanes, and man, this year’s coaching carousel feels a lot more hectic and chaotic than usual. Just a couple days ago, it was reported that Cristobal and Oregon were working on an extension. Now, this. I don’t know what to make of anything anymore. We’re going to have to do an episode of the College Football Roundup solely on the coaching changes this offseason.
*The Kenny Pickett slide is getting a lot of pub since the ACC Championship:

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson brought up a good point about how tricky of a situation this is. I mean, you coach your defensive players to lay off once the quarterback starts to slide, so what’s to stop ’em from doing this all the time knowing they can get away with it? I don’t like being the fun police because that run was simply electric, but maybe there’s something to consider here moving forward.
*The New Year’s Six is set:
- Peach Bowl: Pittsburgh vs. Michigan State, 12/30
- Cotton Bowl (CFP Semi-final): Cincinnati vs. Alabama, 12/31
- Orange Bowl (CFP Semi-final): Michigan vs. Georgia, 12/31
- Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Notre Dame, 1/1
- Rose Bowl: Utah vs. Ohio State, 1/1
- Sugar Bowl: Baylor vs. Ole Miss, 1/1
*Personally, my top college football top 10 would look like this:
- Alabama
- Michigan
- Georgia
- Cincinnati
- Notre Dame
- Baylor
- Ohio State
- Ole Miss
- Oklahoma State
- Utah
