Earlier this year, our Lead Music Writer and Utility Man, Steven McCash, came to me and said he had this crazy idea for a podcast. We’d get together and talk about movies as they turned 21 years old, the legal drinking age here in the United States of America, and their impact on pop culture and influence on the film industry. The twist would be that we’d prepare a cocktail with a theme similar to the movie. I told him I was in, we roped in our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and we set up a time to record our first episode. After that first show, we all felt like we were onto something with it. It was a ton of fun from the get-go. So, we started scheduling Saturday recording sessions – three episodes at a time, and it was off to the races from there. Since then, it’s become one of the most fun things we do here at SoBros Network. Part of it is the style of the show itself. Part of it is going back and watching movies I haven’t seen in years (if at all). And yes, part of it is the cocktail. I’m proud of Steven for his vision on this project, and how well he executes it as the host. So, let’s dig into what we did on this show this year as we kicked off a helluva podcast run.
Drinking With…A Retrospective on Movies Turning 21 This Year
Ep. 01: Drinking With…American Psycho – link – What better place to start this wonderful podcast than with an iconic Christian Bale performance? I wrote about this one back in the spring, specifically how relevant it still is in the year 2021.
Ep. 02: Drinking With…Best In Show – link – This was one of the three movies I saw for the first time in preparation for this podcast. I instantly fell in love with its sense of humor.
Ep. 03: Drinking With…Gladiator – link – One of the greatest films of all time, this one is Brandon’s favorite. It’s always worth a re-watch.
Ep. 04: Drinking With…Bring It On – link – Nothing weird at all about three grown ass men doing a podcast on a movie about cheerleading.
Ep. 05: Drinking With…O Brother, Where Art Thou? – link – This one is probably a top 10 favorite movie of mine, but Steven….not so much. This is the first movie we watched for this show that we really disagreed on.
Ep. 06: Drinking With…High Fidelity – link – I wrote a full review of this one on an edition of Stoney Sees for the SoBros Network Patreon page, and while this may be the quintessential Steven McCash movie, it was a hard pass from me.
Ep. 07: Drinking With…Remember the Titans – link – We revisited this Disney classic right at beginning of football season.
Ep. 08: Drinking With…Scary Movie – link – An underrated Spooky Season classic, in my opinion. One that holds up surprisingly well, no less.
Ep. 09: Drinking With…The Cell – By far the coolest looking livestream we’ve ever done. I mean…I actually liked the movie solely for how weird it was…but honestly, it was all secondary to the work that this team put in to put on such a cool looking show. Very proud of this one.
Ep. 10: Drinking With…Dude, Where’s My Car? – link – I am ashamed of my 14-year-old self for ever thinking this movie was actually funny.
Ep. 11: Drinking With…How the Grinch Stole Christmas – link – What a way to get us into the holiday spirit! Also, who wouldn’t want to see Willem Dafoe as The Grinch? I thought that was a valid suggestion.
Ep. 12: Drinking With…Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – link – Holy SHIT, I thought I remembered this one being really cool, action-packed, and epic. The only thing that came across on this one was ‘boring.’
Ep. 13: Drinking With…The Year In Review, 2000 – link – The best of the rest, honorable mentions, and a look at the year that was 2000.
