There was an awful lot of discourse throughout the week last week about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his limitations at the most important position on the American tackle football field. And, with just over a minute left in yesterday’s NFC Championship game, Jimmy G had the chance to prove the world wrong. Instead, he caved into the Aaron Donald pressure, and threw a wobbly knuckle ball that ended up bouncing off of JaMycal Hasty‘s hands, and into the hands of Travin Howard.

That is just a horrendous play. Admittedly, I’m just a nobody with a keyboard, but one thing you see from the great quarterbacks is the immediate recognition of when a play is breaking down. I get trying to make a play, but surely you’re thinking that you have one more down. You throw that ball out of bounds and live to fight another down. You absolutely can’t force that throw from that position under such tremendous pressure. That is exactly how balls end up intercepted. And hell, if you are going to throw that ball, you can’t have it knuckling so hard that your receiver can’t corral it. Just a disastrous end for what was otherwise a damn good season for the 49ers.
I’d stop short of calling yesterday’s NFC Championship a classic – it was close, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was good. Both head coaches took turns trying to out-cute the other. Both made some questionable calls. Both teams dropped interceptions late in the game. At times, I caught myself asking, “do either of these teams want to win this one?”
But, in the 4th quarter, in a tight ball game, with a chance to go win it, Jimmy G went out there and proved everyone justified in doubting him. Fair to the guy or not, that’s going to be the narrative on him moving forward because of the magnifying glass that comes with the NFC Championship.

Seems bad – as the broadcasters alluded to, that just may have been Jimmy G’s last ride as the quarterback of the 49ers. If something walks like a duck and quacks, should we then be surprised to learn that it is indeed a duck? Jimmy G was good enough to get you there, but I just don’t think he’s going to win it all for you.
