Growing up, I had no real idea what a wendigo was. I knew it was some sort of scary mythical creature, but the only reference point I had was, as a recent revelation on the latest episode of Phone It In taught me, the whack ass wendigo character from the old X-Men game. I thought it might’ve been that abominable snowman from that skiing game from Windows 95 too, but I was wrong. A stupid kid. Anyway, it was always in my periphery as a kid who was into weird legends, but I never really stop and took the time to learn about it….which, is actually probably pretty normal. I think I might’ve scared my parents had I taken a sudden obsessive interest in a creature that looks like a White Walker from Game of Thrones, is always hungry, and sometimes uncontrollably eats people. Nonetheless, all of this is why I was absolutely thrilled when Rooster suggested this topic for our latest episode of Phone It In.
It’s perfect timing – it’s cold and frozen outside. That’s where wendigos like to chill. That’s what they’re all about, if you will. We talk about cryptids quite a bit here on SoBros Network, specifically on Phone It In. I don’t know if the wendigo is technically a cryptid, but it doesn’t get the respect it deserves in the supernatural creature conversation. I’m willing to say that much. That’s what I’ve learned from Rooster on this show.
And, why wouldn’t you enjoy this spooky tale? There’s a little bit of everything in the legend – evil, malevolence, and even some casual cannibalism like I mentioned before. It’s an interesting take on the creature-in-the-woods bit, and it even has an interesting parallel message on greed and colonialism. It’s a scary ass creature that can eat you, but also makes you reflect upon your own inner desires. I love it.
