Did You Hear About the Morgans? has two good comedic actors, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, but it does not stop this movie from being predictable and repetitive. There are some funny parts, but no surprises…and those funny parts are the same parts in the previews that have been shown over and over. Paul and Meryl Morgan (Grant and Parker) are going through a rough time in their relationship. They are married, but do not live together. Paul cheated on Meryl and her trust is thrown out the window. However, after they witness a murder, they are put in the witness protection program and sent to a very small town in Wyoming. And while they are there maybe they can get to know each other again and fall back in love. That makes complete sense.
This is where all the laughs are supposed to come in because there is nothing funnier than a New York couple sent to the middle of nowhere right? How will they get along with each other and their new environment? Will the assassin find them? Are the Morgans going to be able to make it and survive? These questions have answers that you already know. It’s a rom-com trying to be an action movie as well, but it is not. It comes off clumsy and stupid. For example, one scene actually has someone getting knocked out by a horseshoe.
I like Grant and Sarah Parker, but, unfortunately, this is not their best work by a long shot. Grant is starting to repeat his characters and their attitude. Paul seems uptight and nervous all the time. He does have quick wit and smart ass comments, but that is included in all of Grant’s roles. And Parker is average. She is playing a New Yorker again who misses the city and cannot make it outdoors. Meryl is a watered-down version of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. I have enjoyed Grant and Parker in other movies, but they are average in this and so is their on-screen chemistry.
Did You Hear About the Morgans? is not terrible. But it is not that great either. It is just an average movie with average performances that includes a plot that has been used for decades. I did not expect a whole lot from this movie, but it should have been better. Or at least try to be anyways.
