The season finale of the NFL season comes to a close this Sunday and it is estimated that over $1 billion is to be legally wagered on the Super Bowl. While the majority of the money will be placed on the point spread there are so many other ways to make money on the game and to make it more exciting to watch. There are now nearly 30 states plus Washington DC that have some legal sports betting live for the ‘big game’ Sunday and prop bets have become a popular and exciting way to wager on sports. A proposition bet is a wager that is not tied to the final score or outcome of the game.
There a countless types of prop bets for the Super Bowl, including more traditional wagers like 1st Scoring Play, Player to Score First Points in the Game and the exact total points scored by a team. The fun doesn’t stop there though as there are some true outside of the box prop bets for bettors to wager on. There are sports betting sites that have odds on the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach, first song performed at halftime, and will a Bengals player do the Icky Shuffle. Coin toss is said to be the most bet-on prop bet. The toss landed on heads last year and was won by Kansas City but the Chiefs lost Tampa Bay in the end. Fun fact: the team winning the coin toss has not won the Super Bowl since Seattle beat Denver in 2014.
Here are a few of my favorite prop bets and the way I’m leaning. If you are going to gamble, make sure you are not wagering money you can not afford to lose. If you or anyone else you know has a gambling problem please call or text the National Council on Problem Gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700.
