Wet Leg Delivers Mesmerizing Nashville Debut

The 2022 version of the British Invasion rolled into Nashville on Monday night with a stop at the Basement East. The Isle of Wright based duo Wet Leg is still weeks away from its debut album being released but that did not stop nearly 400 eager fans from selling out Basement East and inviting the group to America and the south.

The excited sold-out crowd can truly annoy their friends with the “I saw Wet Leg before they got big” or “I saw them before their first album came out” lines. Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers have quickly made a huge splash on the music scene with their extremely successful lead single “Chaise Longue,” an infectious tongue-in-cheek track featuring a rather obscure line from Mean Girls: “Is your muffin buttered? Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?”

Numerous times now on this tour, the shows have had to be moved to larger venues to accommodate an ever growing fan base. Their recent stop in Minneapolis was first booked for a 600-person capacity theater before moving to the legendary and extremely larger First Avenue. The Nashville date of the tour was originally scheduled to be played at the original and much smaller Basement on 8th Ave. That show sold out immediately and, after much demand, was moved to Basement East

Those lucky enough to be in attendance were able to get an early sneak peek of what the first Wet Leg album will sound like before its April 8 release and they were not disappointed. The duo sprinted through eleven of the twelve songs on their upcoming album and kicked the show off with the records opening song “Being in Love,” a song about the funny way we all feel when cupid first hits you with his arrow.

Wet Leg at Basement East

Wet Leg has released five songs off of their debut and by the crowd’s reaction to hearing them live leads one to believe they have been on repeat for weeks. Their second single and my personal favorite “Wet Dream” was the first of the few sing-along moments of the night that also included the other releases “Too Late Now,” “Oh No,” and “Angelica.”

There wasn’t a lot of small talk in between songs as the group just delivered heater after heater during their brisk 50-something minute set. Fans of early 2000’s British boy bands were treated to an unexpected treat halfway through the show when Wet Leg played their lone cover of the night. I am willing to bet that hearing Boyzone member Ronan Keatings’ “Life is a Rollercoaster” covered during the show was not on anyone’s Wet Leg bingo card.

Rhian thanked the exuberant crowd for coming out before diving into the song that everyone come to hear.  “Chaise Longue” seemed to be everywhere in 2021 especially in every other video on Tik Tok and the raucous crowd sang alongside Rhian and Hester with fierce joy before they walked out into the brisk spring air and headed to their next stop to tell everyone how they just saw a band blow up in front of their own eyes.
